Okay boys and girls, let's have all your assessments on Ted Thompson s career with the Green Bay Packers discussed in this one single thread.

Keep the personal attacks to a bare minimum and keep it ON Ted Thompson.

If there are a few posts going off topic, don't be the jerk that continues the off topicness (yeah thats right i made a new word). Instead be the leader who brought the topic back to life! Be a thread saver! :)

My thoughts... Ted has done a good job of fillup our 1 through 53 very well, however needs to take a few more worthwhile risks (ie Chris Canty) acquisitions to put us over the top. Kind of like he did this draft. By doing that trade it really has excited me, yes, I do mean in THAT way as well.

We have a solid core, we need super stars and we need them now. The switch to the 3 - 4 I think should have been done sooner. Although, when we got to the NFC Championship game I believe it was felt, hey its not broke don't try to fix it. I think that was a mistake. It's my opinion that Mike wanted to switch to the 3 - 4 years ago but didn't.

Yea I agree we have good depth everywhere except maybe to D line ( as soon as jenkins went down so did the season) but that may have been fixed with the addition of raji and hopefully harrel will get healthy. And yes we do need stars especially on defense, the only elite player on defense right now is aaron kampman and maybe nick collins if he can repeat last year. Offense has enough stars and weapons we just need to start jackson at rb or use a 2 back system.

Now to ted. i think hes done a good job but what he needs to do is secure the core players and if there cap room then sign a few starts which will win us a championship.
brandon jackson is amazing

I believe Ted Thompson, who if doesn't produce will get fired by the impatient fans (not like me), has secured our future for 10 years with good young players. After all, he did help get the Seahawks to the Super Bowl with his amazing signing.

Yes, Ted did the Favre thing... which I still can't see why people are still grieving the loss of a man at the end of his career who can't finish a season and replaced him with one of the best Quarterbacks in the NFL right now (which is a great example of blind ignorance on their part) ...but that is the past.

Now, I want you to all know, the Yankees way doesn't work in the NFL, it's tried and has yet to produce a Super Bowl. The Redskins, the cowboys you name it, it has not worked. The whole Reggie White thing now, that was the sheer grace of God. And to let you know I don't think 1 big FA is bad UNLESS it is too much money or affects the locker room.

Anyway, Ted Thompson. I think he has been doing fine. Some fans are ignorant to the process we have made, especially that we were 13-3 the season before and we had multiple injuries this season.

...Maybe you might bring up the fact that "The Bears were 13-3 and then look how they fell!" But I ask you, how old is that defense? The Packers defense is young and has plenty of years to get better, and if we a 13-3 on the 2nd year of the Thompson Plan, then you guys do NOT know what you are missing to see.

Anything negative I say about him? Ok, I will. I don't like the punter change, BAD front office decision.

While I HATE the times it takes I think Thompson is rebuilding the team right after the former GM didn't do so well with keeping the talent stocked.

The talent level on this team is a lot better than it has been in a long long time other than maybe the linemen which I think are the most important parts because I think everything is won and lost up front.

I think the talent on the lines is getting there though.... slowly but surely.

Let's look at a G.M.'s key judgment factors.

First and foremost the NUMBER ONE priority and responsibility for a G.M. is to acquire a franchise QB.

How many G.M.'s in the NFL have accomplished that? I think Ted has done that. Some will argue, but heed Zeros instructions (Off Topicness) and keep this about TED and do not argue Aaron here "Specifically"

Secondly... The most important hire for a G.M. is "The Coach." You can have every thing, but if you do not have a great coach, well, nothing will fall into place. I think the jury is still out on Ted's Hiring of Mike. I hope he was right.

Third.... The Cap. Ted has done wonders... A+ since he arrived.

Fourth.... Position Depth. See above posts, some great points by Zero and every one agrees I am sure.

My Grades...

Franchise Q.B. Grade A

Coach Grade C+ (Final Exam Dec 2009)

Cap Management Grade A+

Position Depth Grade B

**** NOTE ****

I am no expert, and I know many on this forum know more about football, the NFL, The Packers, and life than I do.

That is my judgements of the four most important areas from which I judge a G.M. (I know... Super Bowls count... But Ted is not done yet and that judgement will come later.)

I amy be wrong, and often am.... One of you younger smart guys figure out his "Grade Point Average" on his four courses above.

Edit... I changed Position Depth to a Grade "B"

2005 Free Agency

F

Terrible move after terrible move. The guards didn't workout. Thompson didn't workout at linebacker. Just a mess although I do agree with letting go Rivera, Wahle, and Sharper. Had to be done to clear cap.

2005 Draft

A

I give anyone an A when they find their "franchise" QB. Not to mention a Pro Bowl safety in Nick Collins and a three year starter in Brady Poppinga.

2006 Free Agency

B+

McCarthy wasn't a bad hire.

Ryan Pickett and Charles Woodson have been great gets for the most part. Woodson is the 2nd best free agent signing in team history behind only Reggie White.

2006 Draft

B+

A.J. Hawk hasn't lived up to his billing, but still a starter. Greg Jennings is amazing. Colledge and Spitz are starters. Blackmon is a nice return guy. Moll has been a capable backup and Jolly has started as well.

2007 Free Agency

B-

Hardest one to grade because on one hand all they did was sign Frank Walker, but on the other hand that turned out to be a wise move. GB won 13 games and they could've gone out and spent a lot of unnecessary money that year, but it probably doesn't make a difference in the end. I actually credit him for standing firm that year.

If you factor in trading for Ryan Grant then I'd give him a B- for that year because you'd also have to factor in not going after Moss which GB at one point could've had, but probably waited a little to long.

2007 Draft

I

Why an I? I evaluate a draft in three years. This is the make or break year for this draft. Right now it's an incomplete.

Although if you'd force me to answer I'd probably give it a C.

2008 Free Agency

C

Brandon Chiller was a nice pickup, but beyond that Thompson didn't do anything. They probably could've signed a couple of veterans like they did this year and perhaps the team wouldn't of had to move say Charles Woodson to SS.

2008 Draft

I

Can't grade a draft that has only one year under it's belt.

2009 is an unknown at this point.

I would say overall a C+ which is about where the Packers have been record wise.

With all do respect.

This statement kind of contradicts itself.

How the hell could any G.M. make the choice to get control of the cap, with out letting go of Rivera, Whale, and replace them with equal value on the field while getting control of the cap. The O Line takes time to work together. This was a NO Win for T.T. but he had no other choice.

You have to start some where?

Sharper.... Good "Career Change For Him." and the Packers.

Letting go of Sharper will be in Ted's resume for eternity.

Not looking for equal value. That's not realistic. Looking for something respectable.

He failed to replace them with even that.

Thompson was cut and I think they started Robert Thomas that year at OLB. Awful....

O'Dwyer may of been too. Klemm was in over his head.

Top to bottom that was not a good year. Draft eventually developed though.

Point taken Porky.

It is a valid point.... But an "F" That is hard for me to concieve.

I am not going to argue with Porky88
