GREEN BAY — Micah Hyde was so good on his 93-yard punt return for a touchdown Sunday night against the Minnesota Vikings that the Green Bay Packers rookie might've gotten himself an additional gig: Returning kickoffs.

At this point, special teams coordinator Shawn Slocum is willing to do just about anything to jump-start the kick return unit, which ranks last in the NFL (15.3-yard average).

"I think we've been really not very effective there through the whole first part of the season. I think it's time that we start generating some production in that area," Slocum said Monday. "It means playing better, it means whoever's out there getting the job done.

"Each game is a new game, each week presents a new set of circumstances and it'll be important that we make good decisions heading into it, practicing and being effective in the game."

In the Packers' 44-31 victory over the Vikings, Hyde lined up to field second half opening kickoff after fellow rookie Johnathan Franklin, who took over the job after the release of incumbent returner Jeremy Ross on Sept. 23, appeared indecisive on a pair of kicks.

"I just thought that he had success there at the end of the second quarter with the punt return and he's been working on it and I felt like the first two returns, we didn't get what we needed," Slocum said. "(So) I decided to go with him."

Hyde returned punts but not kickoffs while in college at Iowa. His 93-yard punt return Sunday night is tied for the fourth-longest in Packers team history.

"A punt return like Micah's, that's an impactful play, that's a game changer. It was a huge momentum play for us," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Monday. "That in itself I think speaks of how we feel about Micah Hyde. I don't know if there's been too many weeks where we handed out a game ball after winning and he's not receiving one. So he's playing very well, very well."

Might as well give Hyde a shot at it since nobody else has worked this season to date.

I think the biggest thing that is hurting our KO returns is the indecision and generally poor decisions by the returners. There are too many kicks where he hesitates or stutter steps before bringing it out. and too many where he should simply not bring it out.

Here is another one of my fascinating time wasting analysese. This time of the KO returns.

In 7 games the opposing team kicked the ball off to us a total of 35 times

12 were touchbacks out of the endzone.

5 were caught and downed in the endzone (all 5 of these were by Ross and they were caught 7 yards deep, -8,-6,-8,-9)

1 went out of bounds on the 1 which gave us the ball on our 40. (Ross made the heads up play on this one.

2 were onside kicks that we recovered

1 was an onside kick that they recovered but a penalty forced a re-kick

2 were onside kicks recovered by them but illegal touching penalties gave us the ball (1 of these was the rekick mentioned above.

This leaves us with 12 kicks that were returned.

7 of these were kicks that had to be returned (short of the goal line)

1 of these was Ross muff.

the six other resulted in the following
17 yd ret to the 22 Yd Ln Ross
14 yd R 17 YL Ross
10 yd R 13 YL Cobb
21 yd R 21 YL Ross
19 yd R 31 YL Kuhn
26 yd R 26 YL Franklin.

5 were kicked into the endzone but brought out

2 yds deep 10 yd R 8 YL Ross
4 yd deep 13 yd R 9YL Ross
3 yd deep 19 yd R 16 YL Hill
8 yd deep 18 yd R 10 YL Franklin
5 yd deep 16 yd R 11 YL Franklin

So again what does all this mean (besides me having too much time again, which I really don't this time. I am putting something rather important off to do this so I hope you all appreciate it.)

My observations:

First of all besides his Muff it seems to me that Ross may have actually made the best decisions on returning the ball Anything more than 5 yards deep he downed. Of the 5 total brought out though his 2 were the shortest.

On 29 kickoffs (not counting the onsides kicks and the OOB kick) We started outside our 20 yard line 4 times (22, 21, 31, 26) All of these came on short kicks and on 2 of the short kicks we still started inside our 20.

on 5 kicks brought out of the endzone we never made it to the 20.

The good news, we have only committed 1 penalty on a KR and that was in week 1.

Our longest return was 26 yards

We only had 2 returns over 20 yards (26, 21) and both of these were on returns that had to be made.

My conclusion: Our kickoff return team sucks. I don't know if it is the return man or the rest of the team, probably a combination of the two, but one thing is for sure it sucks.

My recommendations

First and most likely option. Put someone else back there, anyone else. It would be difficult for anyone to do any worse that what we have already seen.

Second, though this would be my preferred option it is also highly unlikely, don't let the opposing team score any more. I could live with these averages if we only had to return 9 more kicks all year.

When Ross is making the best decisions of all your KO returners, look to the ST coach. lol

If it was just ONE dude shitting himself in those situations, maybe write it off as the player.

Franklin ain't ready. Anything to keep it out of his hands.

No relevancy to the Packers now, but Ross had a good game returning both kickoffs and punts last week for Detroit.

I really don't like Franklin back there, in fact I'm liking Franklin less and less in general. Hyde is excellent on punts because he is "safe". It's a bonus if he can get a big one occasionally, but I credit good blocking and poor punt coverage more for his big return. He would probably be a safe kickoff returner too, just not real fast.

I also hope they give Nixon a chance and/or that guy on the practice squad who was so great last year in college. Even Harper might be a possibility.

Give it to Hyde but under the following rules. If the ball is in the endzone. Take the touchback and start at the 20. If it is short, catch it and move your ass up field. At least get to the 20.

The majority of time, there is a good kick, blocking is the main reason. The returner usually beats 1,2 or maybe 3 guys himself. Other than that, either the defenders are not in their lanes or the blockers handle them.
The world needs ditch diggers too Danny!!!

Martha Careful (10-May) : 1. this is true of all our linemen. 2. His run block is fine. 3. If all OL played like he has, we would win SB.
beast (10-May) : Meyers pass blocking is really good, his run blocking is really not.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : Packers have claimed DE Spencer Waege off of waivers from the 49ers and waived DT Rodney Mathews.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : And the OL protections seem to be good.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : I really don't know lol. I don't see him getting blown up.

Mucky Tundra (9-May) : 4th
Zero2Cool (9-May) : because he's 1st
Mucky Tundra (9-May) : Myers isn't even the 3rd best C on the roster atm
Martha Careful (9-May) : I am not sure I understand the Myers hate. He was consistently our third best lineman. RG and LT were worse.
beast (9-May) : Just saying I don't think moving Myers would help Myers.
beast (9-May) : Center is usually considered the easiest position physically if you can handle the snap stuff.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : Bust it is then
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Context. Sounds like Myers won't be cross-trained. C or bust.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : @BookOfEli_NFL Packers pass game coordinator, Jason Vrable said that Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks shared a placed in Florida while train
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : For now...
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers go about evaluating their "best five," OL coach Luke Butkus makes on thing clear: "Josh Myers is our center."
beast (8-May) : Though I'm a bit surprised letting go of CBs, I thought we needed more not less
beast (8-May) : It was confusing with two DB Anthony Johnson anyways
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers actually had Ray Lewis on the phone.
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers wanted to draft Ray Lewis. Ravens stole him.

Zero2Cool (6-May) : Petty, but it's annoying me how the NFL is making the schedule release an event.
Mucky Tundra (4-May) : @mattschneidman Matt LaFleur on how he tore his pec: “Got in a fight with the bench press. I lost.”
Zero2Cool (3-May) : Jordan Love CAN sign an extension as of today. Might tak weeks/months though

Mucky Tundra (3-May) : @ProFootballTalk Jaylen Warren: Steelers' special teams coach has discussed Justin Fields returning kicks.
Zero2Cool (2-May) : Season officially ending tonight for Bucks ... sad face
Zero2Cool (2-May) : Giannis Antetokounmpo is listed as out for tonight's game.
dfosterf (2-May) : Surprisingly low initially is my guess cap wise, but gonna pay the piper after that
dfosterf (2-May) : The number on Love is going to be brutal.
Zero2Cool (2-May) : May 3rd. Extension day for Jordan Love. (soonest)
Zero2Cool (1-May) : USFL MVP QB Alex McGough moved to WR. So that's why no WR drafted!
earthquake (1-May) : Packers draft starters at safety ever few years. Collins, Clinton-Dix, Savage
beast (1-May) : Why can't the rookies be a day 1 starter? Especially when we grabbed 3 of them at the position
dfosterf (1-May) : Not going to be shocked if Gilmore goes to the Lions.
dfosterf (1-May) : I hear you dhazer, but my guess would be Gilmore Colts and Howard Vikings from what little has been reported.
Mucky Tundra (30-Apr) : S learn from McKinney who learns from Hafley who learns from the fans. Guaranteed Super Bowl
Zero2Cool (30-Apr) : could*
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Safeties should learn from Xavier.
dhazer (29-Apr) : And what about grabbing a Gilmore or Howard at CB ? Those are all Free Agents left
dhazer (29-Apr) : out of curiosity do they try and sign Simmons or Hyde to let these young safeties learn from, they can't be day 1 starters.
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : I miss having Sam Shields.
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Not that he's making excuses, just pointing it out
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : That's for dang sure. Make our erratic kicker have no excuse!
packerfanoutwest (28-Apr) : having a great long snapper is gold
Zero2Cool (28-Apr) : LaFleur looking like he had some weight. Coachin will do that lol
