The Packers’ defense is often highly criticized for giving up a lot of yards and points. Is it justified?

The answer is Yes, the defense can be blamed. For several years now, they have ranged between mediocre and bad. We have won so many games basically by outscoring other teams even though our D has given up so much.

The better question would be, is the defense in that subpar range because of the Capers schemes or because Ted Thompson has failed to add enough quality personnel? That's a tough call, but I'm going with the latter. Certainly Capers schemes have left openings for other teams - as gimmick defenses are prone to do, but I would suggest that those schemes are necessary. I would argue that without trickery, we just don't have the quality personnel to have any credible pass rush or to shut down a team's running game without doing something unusual, thereby becoming vulnerable elsewhere. We are going with a couple of plow horses at ILB; As much as I was hoping Perry would be a bookend for Matthews at OLB, he seems pretty ordinary. The D Line is only even borderline because of Jolly coming back, Maybe Datone Jones will help, but it hasn't happened yet. Corner has been a bright spot, but without better front seven play, the corners can't be expected to shut down everything all the time. And I grudgingly have to go along with those saying we should have gotten more quality help at Safety. Getting Hayward and Burnett back will help a lot, but I still say the front seven other than Matthews is saturated with mediocrity.

I agree with the analysis of TPB regarding the Packers defense.
I would argue that Perry and Jones look less than ordinary with the qualification being that they are young and at the bottom of the learning curve.

We are only 3 games in and we got guys coming back who could make a big difference.

I guess we gotta hang our hats on that.

The problem the last two games is that the D played well and the Offense put up lots of points and then the D lost it's edge. They have shown they can play but not for 60 minutes yet and not with a commanding lead.

It may be harder to stay pumped up when your winning by 20 or more but like in Bengals game you have to get on top and stay there.

The D played very well against the Bengals after the botched return gave them the 14 points. They forced turnovers and shut them down and then later gave up what? Three TD's?

Consistency is definitely lacking. It's frustrating as hell to see them step up when we needed them to and then give the game back.

A quality Saftey Duo is the main thing that derails this defense.

Dom's D is a blitzing defense. So that means you need your Safteys to cover well and make plays accordingly if good quarterbacks can get the ball out quickly. The Jennings and McMillian combo hurt us bad in the first few weeks of the season. Getting Burnett will help, but we surely need to find a better safety to play by him if this defense wants to be anything good. I honestly love all the rest of our defense.

The corners aren't THAT bad. I think Shields might be getting exposed especially against Bolden in week 1. But he played pretty well against Green except that TD against the Bengals.

Our whole front 7 is probably better than the secondary. We just need to put this shit all together. Get the whole defense clicking on all Cylinders. And having Burnett back will help the defense tremendously, not just for his skills, but for his communication to the defense

I kind of remember The offense turning the ball over twice in the 2nd half the last one went for THE WINNINGTD.

Yet some of you are blaming the defense on the loss?

The defense forced 4 straight turnover, all in Bengal territory, scoring on one. and The Packers offense could only manage 6 points off the other 3 turnovers, yet The defense gets the blame for the loss.

Absolutley incredible.
