Can't say I saw this coming. It certainly helps clearing up the logjam of bodies at DL that the team had and gives more depth to OLB. Since Neal is more of a pass-rusher there's some logic to it.

I'm thinking 3rd and long... nickel package which is a lot like a 4-2

DTs (two of the following)
(Datone) Jones, Raji, Daniels or Boyd

OLBers (moved up to play a stand-up 4-3 DE like position)
Perry and Neal

Rush LB:
Matthews (everyone will know Matthews is coming on the blitz, but he won't show what gap he's going though until after the snap)

Cover LB:
(Brad) Jones ... (if they go to dime then Jones comes off the field for 6th DB)

Since the Pacjkers will be in sub packages a lot, I think it's a move designed to help the pass rush without having to blitz, and it still keeps them stout against the run.

Well, in the interests of us being bigger and faster on D, I can see this working in some packages. Why not? Kind of like a James Harrison type of rover on the edge. Big, powerful player on the outside with some athletic ability.

Neal's "clueless" quote tells me he isn't all-in with this change, but maybe he will come around and play it well. Doesn't hurt to try this.

Think they will ask him to drop 5 pounds or more to fit into that mold a bit more in terms of size?

I didn't like this one bit...until I came here and read through the different comments.

I read a tweet from Ty Dunne yesterday just stating they were experimenting with the move and I thought it was an awful idea.

Mike Neal is extremely athletic and quick so he can probably work in some zone coverage if needed.
