Can anyone tell me how many 3-and-outs the Packers have had this season compared to last season?

It seems like we've had more, which could be why our D has been so shitty.

Thanks.

That aspect gets overlooked by so many... Our FAIL on 3rd down Sunday was HUGE for wearing us down, etc.

I was watching a post-game analysis show here in the Philly market. One of the regulars is Jon Runyan, the OT for the Eagles. He said some pretty insightful things last night. He was asked what was the difference between Sunday's win over the Giants and the Ass-whipping the Eagles absorbed in the previous game against them. He cited the offense (this time) assisting the defense, ESPECIALLY the linebackers (his words). He said you might not know it, but in the NFL these days, 99.999% of all talk that occurs on the field is in and amongst the linebackers, including smack-talk with the opponents. He said there is very little talk on the lines, smack or otherwise. He said that not only do the linebackers wear out far and away faster than the rest of the D, they also do not have time to consult with the coaches and look at the photographs and make the necessary adjustments adequately to address what "looks" and "wrinkles" are being thrown at them.

I know I didn't answer your stat question, but I thought you might be interested in what was said. As to Jon, I think it fair to say he knows what the hell he's talking about.

Our 3rd down percentage last year was 43%. 86/202

Our 3rd down percentage this year: 42%. 76/179

Sorry, I couldn't find the stat for 3 and outs.

Want a stat that will piss you off..

Penalty yards this season.. we lead the league with 844.

Next team... 739 by the Raiders.. '

But really our offensive numbers aren't that out of skew.. and even our penalty yards last year were terrible.. 1006 yards.

Here is some more stats to ponder..the first one dispells the point that the defense is one the field more.

07' Defense played 62.125 snaps per game
08' that is down to 58.6 snaps per game

On offense we went from 5.5 yards per play to 5.0 yards per play, while on defense we went from giving up 5.0 yards per play in 07 to 5.5 this year.

819 Offensive snaps = 409 yards less in offense.
821 Defensive snaps = 410 yards more in yards allowed...

That is one 60 yard drive a game through 13 weeks.. last week probably made that number worse.

Another number that pops... last year we gave up held on defensive third downs 66% of the time.. this year we are down to 61%.. they can't get themselves off the field.

Those number there flip the close games we won last year over to losses this year.. subtle little things..

we've actually been pretty good on third downs this year. and not that many 3 and outs... I think that's why Sunday was so frustrating. we weren't used to it.

really? i'm not saying we're bad on third down. once we convert the first thrid down, we're good. i feel like we went 3-out a lot this year. like it was either a long drive or three and out.

is it just me that feels like this?

The stat I'd be interested in is related to penalties.

How many TD's and yards and first downs have we lost out on because of those pesky yellow flags?

yeah or how many time our d stopped the other guys on third down but got pnelaized, or when our offense converted on third down only to lose it to a flag (i'm looking at you moll! j/k)

I know this is a bit of a different stat, but I found this one pretty funny and worth noting aswell.

Another stat that shows the margins in our losses.

                  Record Net Points

Vikings 8-5 31
Bears 7-6 26
Packers 5-8 36
Lions 0-13 -194

That is the number in the last game. (other than the score...)

The difference between the Texans and us in the number of plays by the offense.

We had the exact same average per play as the Texans. 7.4
They converted on 3rd down, we didn't.

Our failure to convert on those third downs is an excellent recipe for failure on defense, as Jon Runyan explained at some length. (see earlier post in this thread)
