Tori still has to be a long shot to make the team but I will not be surprised if he does not make another team.

The evolution of Tori Gurley, Punt Blocker Extraordinaire, traces back to a student/faculty basketball game.

Gurley was in the sixth grade. He broke free on a fast break and flushed his first-ever dunk. One year later, in a real game, Gurley palmed a missed shot in midair and dunked.

"I was always just so long," said the Green Bay Packers wide receiver, pausing to outstretch his arms in the locker room.

This sheer length has become Gurley's best weapon. The undrafted rookie faced long odds from Day 1 here. His position is overcrowded. One roster spot - maybe - is up for grabs at wide receiver.

By his count, Gurley has blocked five punts in practice. And two days after his clutch catch set up Mason Crosby's game-winning field goal in Indianapolis, the 6-foot-4 wideout from South Carolina put on a show on offense at practice Sunday.

With judgment day rapidly approaching, this dark-horse is picking up momentum at the best possible time.

"It's happening," Gurley said. "It's something I've worked very hard for. I'm going to continue to work because that's the only thing I can control."

All camp, Gurley has been a problem for the Packers' punt team. Block No. 5 came Sunday. Using his long arms, Gurley has closed in fast on punter Tim Masthay. He never played defensive end, but Gurley has enjoyed imitating two of his favorite players growing up, Jevon Kearse and Julius Peppers.

Gurley insists this was all part of his plan. All along, he wanted to leave college a year early for the pros. So, thinking ahead, the wide receiver asked to play on special teams as a junior. In addition to compiling 44 catches for 465 yards and four touchdowns, Gurley lined up as the left tackle on kickoff returns, the gunner on the punt team and he rushed off the edge on punt returns.

Against the Colts, Gurley was a hiccup away from his first preseason blocked punt. With 5 minutes to go, he blew through safety Mike Newton and nearly lunged for the block. On the fly, he contemplated the game situation. Down, 14-13. Time ticking. Gurley lived for another day. At the last moment, he pulled up.

Gurley ended up getting the last word anyway. After Green Bay recovered its onside kick after tying the game at 21, Gurley caught a 12-yard pass from No. 3 quarterback Graham Harrell and toted a Colts defender on his back to get out of bounds. One play later, Crosby was in range for his game-winning 50-yard field goal.

"I thought that was the biggest play of the game for us - the throw, the catch and the ability to get out of bounds," coach Mike McCarthy said. "He's making plays on a regular basis. He's doing a nice job."

Veteran Donald Driver understands this back-roads entrance to the NFL. He needed to excel on special teams to claw into the league himself. In Gurley, and all of Green Bay's young receivers, he sees part of his old self.

"When he came in, he was nervous and didn't know what to expect," Driver said. "Now, he's getting into his own. His confidence level is great. He's going out there and making plays."

Gurley will not be a burner, by any means, at this level. Competitors Chastin West and Diondre Borel are much quicker. To compensate, Gurley relies on focus and body control. With the Gamecocks, he never dropped a pass. And at 83½ inches, Gurley had the longest arm-span among wide receivers at the NFL scouting combine. Alabama's Julio Jones was next at 81¾. No other receiver eclipsed 80.

Too bad there's not a spot on the final 53 for a designated punt blocker. . .

Keep him on the PS in case one of our WR gets hurt this year. Both Driver and Nelson may be gone by next year so it makes since to keep Gurley and West on the PS or IR for a year.

I wish they could stash someone on the IR. Putting these guys on the PS is too risky.

It would be great if we could keep Gurley, Smithson, West, Williams, Taylor, and Crabtree on the active or practice squad. But I think any of them would be snapped up on the PS or going through waivers to get there.IMO. Maybe I'm too biased but I like all thesse recievers.

Zero, I believe you're right with Grabtree. I should not have lumped him with the others. But if he were cut and then we had injury, he will have been picked up. This is what I meant to say in his regard.

To put all this in another way, I believe we have 5 TEs and 8 WRs that will play in the NFL.

I thought Crabtree was a rookie last season? In order to be eligible for the practice squad, a player has to have fewer than three accrued seasons. If he was a rookie in 2010, he would still have practice squad eligibility.

EDIT: He was signed by the Chiefs in 2009, and he was active for all of last season. Looks like he is indeed out of eligibility. I was confusing the fact that a player cannot spend more than three seasons on the practice squad with the fact that no player with a full accrued year can be signed to the practice squad.

What seems to be forgotten in the West vs. Gurley debate is that West is more likely to contribute on special teams. He can be a gunner on the punt coverage team. He got a tackle as a gunner against the Colts. Good gunners are valuable special teams players. As for punt block specialists, well, there is no such thing, because punts are rarely blocked in the NFL. It's hard for me to believe that Gurley is going to be the league's first punt block specialist since maybe ever.

I loved that catch on the game-winning field goal drive, though. It was sort of a Plaxico Burress type of play, just going up there and getting the ball. Also, he had the presence of mind to get out of bounds immediately, stopping the clock. I like Gurley. I just think that West might have the edge on him, with his superior speed.

Martha Careful (17h) : 1. this is true of all our linemen. 2. His run block is fine. 3. If all OL played like he has, we would win SB.
beast (18h) : Meyers pass blocking is really good, his run blocking is really not.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : Packers have claimed DE Spencer Waege off of waivers from the 49ers and waived DT Rodney Mathews.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : And the OL protections seem to be good.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : I really don't know lol. I don't see him getting blown up.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : -3 buwahhhahaaha
Mucky Tundra (9-May) : 4th
Zero2Cool (9-May) : because he's 1st
Mucky Tundra (9-May) : Myers isn't even the 3rd best C on the roster atm
Martha Careful (9-May) : I am not sure I understand the Myers hate. He was consistently our third best lineman. RG and LT were worse.
beast (9-May) : Just saying I don't think moving Myers would help Myers.
beast (9-May) : Center is usually considered the easiest position physically if you can handle the snap stuff.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : Bust it is then
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Context. Sounds like Myers won't be cross-trained. C or bust.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : @BookOfEli_NFL Packers pass game coordinator, Jason Vrable said that Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks shared a placed in Florida while train
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : For now...
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers go about evaluating their "best five," OL coach Luke Butkus makes on thing clear: "Josh Myers is our center."
beast (8-May) : Though I'm a bit surprised letting go of CBs, I thought we needed more not less
beast (8-May) : It was confusing with two DB Anthony Johnson anyways
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers actually had Ray Lewis on the phone.
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers wanted to draft Ray Lewis. Ravens stole him.
Martha Careful (6-May) : Happy 93rd Birthday to the Greatest Baseball Player of All-Time...Willie Mays
Zero2Cool (6-May) : Walter Stanely's son
buckeyepackfan (6-May) : and released CB Anthony Johnson and DL Deandre Johnson and waived/injured WR Thyrick Pitts (thigh-rick).
buckeyepackfan (6-May) : The Green Bay Packers have signed WR Julian Hicks, OL Lecitus Smith (luh-SEET-us) and WR Dimitri Stanley
Zero2Cool (6-May) : Petty, but it's annoying me how the NFL is making the schedule release an event.
Mucky Tundra (4-May) : @mattschneidman Matt LaFleur on how he tore his pec: “Got in a fight with the bench press. I lost.”
Zero2Cool (3-May) : Jordan Love CAN sign an extension as of today. Might tak weeks/months though
TheKanataThrilla (3-May) : Packers decline 5th year option for Stokes
Mucky Tundra (3-May) : @ProFootballTalk Jaylen Warren: Steelers' special teams coach has discussed Justin Fields returning kicks.
Zero2Cool (2-May) : Season officially ending tonight for Bucks ... sad face
Zero2Cool (2-May) : Giannis Antetokounmpo is listed as out for tonight's game.
dfosterf (2-May) : Surprisingly low initially is my guess cap wise, but gonna pay the piper after that
dfosterf (2-May) : The number on Love is going to be brutal.
Zero2Cool (2-May) : May 3rd. Extension day for Jordan Love. (soonest)
Zero2Cool (1-May) : USFL MVP QB Alex McGough moved to WR. So that's why no WR drafted!
earthquake (1-May) : Packers draft starters at safety ever few years. Collins, Clinton-Dix, Savage
beast (1-May) : Why can't the rookies be a day 1 starter? Especially when we grabbed 3 of them at the position
dfosterf (1-May) : Not going to be shocked if Gilmore goes to the Lions.
dfosterf (1-May) : I hear you dhazer, but my guess would be Gilmore Colts and Howard Vikings from what little has been reported.
Mucky Tundra (30-Apr) : S learn from McKinney who learns from Hafley who learns from the fans. Guaranteed Super Bowl
Zero2Cool (30-Apr) : could*
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Safeties should learn from Xavier.
dhazer (29-Apr) : And what about grabbing a Gilmore or Howard at CB ? Those are all Free Agents left
dhazer (29-Apr) : out of curiosity do they try and sign Simmons or Hyde to let these young safeties learn from, they can't be day 1 starters.
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : I miss having Sam Shields.
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Not that he's making excuses, just pointing it out
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : That's for dang sure. Make our erratic kicker have no excuse!
packerfanoutwest (28-Apr) : having a great long snapper is gold
Zero2Cool (28-Apr) : LaFleur looking like he had some weight. Coachin will do that lol
