IronMan has some catching up to do.. lol.

At 83, work still suits him quite fine

Roy Plinska finds what he likes and sticks with it. Fifty years in the same house. Fifty-nine years with the same wife.

And an astounding 65 years at the same workplace, the downtown Boston Store.

This is not a retirement story. At age 83, Roy plans to keep working full time as long as he's healthy. That could be a while. He says he has not taken a single sick day in 65 years.

Working clearly agrees with Roy. He's tall and lean and younger looking than his age, and he tops it all off with an impressive head of white hair. He doesn't eat fast food, he said, and he never smoked, even back in the days when doctors recommended it.

Friday evening, Roy is throwing himself a party at the Rock Bottom Restaurant and Brewery to celebrate his mega-time on the job. He did the same thing five years ago and five years before that. He wouldn't tell me the secret theme of the party, but hinted that it would be captured in the 80-pound cheese sculpture he ordered.

These days, Roy works on the store's shipping and receiving dock off Michigan St. As we talked there this week, delivery drivers came and went, and most of them said they would see Roy at his party.

UPS driver Matt Pallen told me the way Roy likes to calculate how far back he and Boston Store go. "He tells me, 'I've been working here 24 more years than you've been on this earth,' " the 41-year-old driver said.

There's more. For most of those 65 years, Roy had a second full-time job as a parking lot attendant across the street from Boston Store, meaning he worked 80-hour weeks. It was usually days 8-5 at the store, and then nights until 1 a.m. at the lot, with precious little sleep between.

About two years ago, he cut back to just the store. "Maybe it was three years. Time goes by kind of fast," he said.

Tell me about it.

Roy grew up near 35th and Hopkins. His mother died of tuberculosis when he was 6, and his dad, Oscar Plinska, was a Milwaukee cop assigned to the corner of 5th and Wisconsin. He's the one who heard about an opening at Boston Store and told young Roy, who had just graduated from Custer High School.

Roy started at the store July 7, 1946, and spent the first nine years (minus two years in the military that Boston Store gives him credit for) parking customers' cars.

"When I started here, I thought I'd stay six months. That was my plan. And I'd get a decent job, not parking cars," he said.

The president of the store back then was a guy named Richard Herzfeld, and Roy started dating his daughter. "I thought someday I might own the store, but I never married her."

Roy has seen numerous owners come and go since then, including Federated Department Stores, Carson Pirie Scott, Bergner's and Saks. Boston Store is currently one of seven department store chains owned by Bon-Ton Stores Inc.

The company's corporate offices are above the downtown Boston Store, and Roy counts president and CEO Bud Bergren as a friend. Bergren gave him a plaque to mark his 65 years, which is well over half the years the store has been in existence since its founding in 1900.

No one at the company's 276 stores has worked there longer than Roy, said Barb Hassler, manager of the Boston Store at the Shops of Grand Avenue. She checked with corporate human resources and found that the closest are two workers with 54 years seniority, one in Ohio and one in Pennsylvania.

"It is extremely amazing he has worked that long," Hassler said. "He's very dependable. He's very friendly. He knows everybody in the building, and he knows every nook and cranny of the building."

Roy has done a variety of jobs at the store, including a brief time on the sales floor. He didn't like that he had to wear a suit.

He hasn't worked this long and in multiple jobs just to give me something to write about someday. He says he needs the money, though his Social Security and pension checks have been showing up for more than a decade now. He and his wife, Frances, who have two grown children, have enjoyed traveling all over the country. Hundreds of postcards Roy collected on these trips cover the walls of the loading dock.

Somehow Roy has found time to have a neatly kept house and yard, said his alderman and friend, Bob Donovan, who added, "He's obviously the epitome of America's old work ethic. For God's sake, this guy doesn't give up!"

Roy can't think of a reason to retire. He's not interested in sitting around trying to think of something to do.

Work keeps him going. And going.

Nicotine is a vasoconstrictor but a bronchodilator, so smoking used to be used as a remedy for asthma. It is still recommended in extreme cases when no other bronchodilators (e.g., emergency inhalers) are at hand. It is the lesser of two evils: getting a little tar in the lungs or suffocating.

Just like any other time frame, when you look back it is always easier to see the clear picture.
Years from now, youngsters will be thinking "How the hell could anyone hold brain cancer causing cell phones next to their heads"

Hell of an accomplishment Roy!!!

Martha Careful (10-May) : 1. this is true of all our linemen. 2. His run block is fine. 3. If all OL played like he has, we would win SB.
beast (10-May) : Meyers pass blocking is really good, his run blocking is really not.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : Packers have claimed DE Spencer Waege off of waivers from the 49ers and waived DT Rodney Mathews.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : And the OL protections seem to be good.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : I really don't know lol. I don't see him getting blown up.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : -3 buwahhhahaaha
Mucky Tundra (9-May) : 4th
Zero2Cool (9-May) : because he's 1st
Mucky Tundra (9-May) : Myers isn't even the 3rd best C on the roster atm
Martha Careful (9-May) : I am not sure I understand the Myers hate. He was consistently our third best lineman. RG and LT were worse.
beast (9-May) : Just saying I don't think moving Myers would help Myers.
beast (9-May) : Center is usually considered the easiest position physically if you can handle the snap stuff.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : Bust it is then
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Context. Sounds like Myers won't be cross-trained. C or bust.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : @BookOfEli_NFL Packers pass game coordinator, Jason Vrable said that Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks shared a placed in Florida while train
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : For now...
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers go about evaluating their "best five," OL coach Luke Butkus makes on thing clear: "Josh Myers is our center."
beast (8-May) : Though I'm a bit surprised letting go of CBs, I thought we needed more not less
beast (8-May) : It was confusing with two DB Anthony Johnson anyways
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers actually had Ray Lewis on the phone.
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers wanted to draft Ray Lewis. Ravens stole him.
Martha Careful (6-May) : Happy 93rd Birthday to the Greatest Baseball Player of All-Time...Willie Mays
Zero2Cool (6-May) : Walter Stanely's son
buckeyepackfan (6-May) : and released CB Anthony Johnson and DL Deandre Johnson and waived/injured WR Thyrick Pitts (thigh-rick).
buckeyepackfan (6-May) : The Green Bay Packers have signed WR Julian Hicks, OL Lecitus Smith (luh-SEET-us) and WR Dimitri Stanley
Zero2Cool (6-May) : Petty, but it's annoying me how the NFL is making the schedule release an event.
Mucky Tundra (4-May) : @mattschneidman Matt LaFleur on how he tore his pec: “Got in a fight with the bench press. I lost.”
Zero2Cool (3-May) : Jordan Love CAN sign an extension as of today. Might tak weeks/months though
TheKanataThrilla (3-May) : Packers decline 5th year option for Stokes
Mucky Tundra (3-May) : @ProFootballTalk Jaylen Warren: Steelers' special teams coach has discussed Justin Fields returning kicks.
Zero2Cool (2-May) : Season officially ending tonight for Bucks ... sad face
Zero2Cool (2-May) : Giannis Antetokounmpo is listed as out for tonight's game.
dfosterf (2-May) : Surprisingly low initially is my guess cap wise, but gonna pay the piper after that
dfosterf (2-May) : The number on Love is going to be brutal.
Zero2Cool (2-May) : May 3rd. Extension day for Jordan Love. (soonest)
Zero2Cool (1-May) : USFL MVP QB Alex McGough moved to WR. So that's why no WR drafted!
earthquake (1-May) : Packers draft starters at safety ever few years. Collins, Clinton-Dix, Savage
beast (1-May) : Why can't the rookies be a day 1 starter? Especially when we grabbed 3 of them at the position
dfosterf (1-May) : Not going to be shocked if Gilmore goes to the Lions.
dfosterf (1-May) : I hear you dhazer, but my guess would be Gilmore Colts and Howard Vikings from what little has been reported.
Mucky Tundra (30-Apr) : S learn from McKinney who learns from Hafley who learns from the fans. Guaranteed Super Bowl
Zero2Cool (30-Apr) : could*
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Safeties should learn from Xavier.
dhazer (29-Apr) : And what about grabbing a Gilmore or Howard at CB ? Those are all Free Agents left
dhazer (29-Apr) : out of curiosity do they try and sign Simmons or Hyde to let these young safeties learn from, they can't be day 1 starters.
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : I miss having Sam Shields.
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Not that he's making excuses, just pointing it out
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : That's for dang sure. Make our erratic kicker have no excuse!
packerfanoutwest (28-Apr) : having a great long snapper is gold
Zero2Cool (28-Apr) : LaFleur looking like he had some weight. Coachin will do that lol
