Beast he's a luxury because your typical pass rush in a 3-4 does not come from the line; and we have 2 in Raji and Jenkins (that's just greedy). He is also keeping a 2nd round draft pick that's ready to play, on the bench. Yes, Jenkins is a luxury.

Well coming off the heals of labor discord, one in which the owners were neck deep in creating, it would take a nads to open up the first salvos of the 2011 season by overpaying in the free agent market.

Of course there should be a ceiling to the price tag the Pack is willing to spend.. just there is other dead weight contracts that could be eradicated to allow for a productive player like Jenkins some room.. the beauty of non guaranteed contracts that are a life blood to the game.

I just don't see the market being bonkers for Jenkins.. if it is.. then you part ways.. but if it is a fair market deal and the Redskins types don't overfill his salary cup.. you ink him to a long term deal with a realistic life expectancy of the deal to be 2 to 3 years.. about when you will have to re-up Raji and Matthews.

But you are as right as right.. for the right price.. it will be interesting if their is a shortened FA period how rapidly guys begin to settle for a paycheck.

He will want a four year deal because he can get a good deal now whereas two/ three years from now it's unlikely his next deal would be for nearly as much.

Unfortunately, I disagree with 93 about teams interest. Jenkins will be hot because everybody is looking for that pass rush and especially from a player that can bring it up the middle. Ted knows he probably only gets the guy for 10 games a year but I see teams going right over the top of that and ignoring it for the most part. There's been some big money laid out there over the last few years for guys nowhere near as talented as this guy is. Unless it's a real serious injury lost time due to a calf or strain won't diminish his value to GM's in need for a pressure guy.

I love the guy but he gets just enough ticky tac injuries that keeps out of too many games to resign for huge bucks. I also think Raji becoming the load he was last year helped Jenkins' cause greatly. That and Dom. So if he does split I think he will be good but not super unless he hits just the right spot. I look at this just like Jones. I think both should stay right where they are. Not that going out being a great player with multiple championships is anybody's goal anymore..

There isn't any doubt Cullen Jenkins is vastly underrated overall, but the Packers are going to let him go. There is zero chance he returns in my view. He allegedly was willing to take a hometown discount, but the Packers passed. There is no way he'll go back on that, especially since other teams will break the bank for him. The big question is whether Mike Neal can replace Jenkins in the nickel package. He showed potential against Detroit and Washington, but an injury cut him down. There banking an awful lot on Neal right now going into this season.

Jenkins will most likely not return with the turn down of the "hometown discount". Truly, I think he is expecting too much for how injury prone he has been the past couple seasons. I understand what he is trying to get, but I don't agree with it.

I believe players such as Neal and Wilson can step up for the challenge of replacing Jenkins, especially with the supporting cast around them.

What's wrong with having more than one pass rushing guy on DL? And what's wrong with being greedy?
If it means more Packers Super Bowl Championships, then I'm for it...

Jenkins isn't keeping on the bench... there are two 3-4 DE spots so both of them could play.
And injuries kept Neal back, not Jenkins... just like injuries kept Harrell back...
Question is how will Neal do after the injury, and can he stay healthy?

I love Pack93z's idea of giving Jenkins a deal that is loaded toward the first 2-3 years, which would keep him here till Matthews and Raji need to re-up. It doesn't seem likely, though, as such a deal would be in the best interest of the Packers but not Jenkins.

I hadn't heard about Jenkins being willing to take a hometown discount but the Packers passing on it. Where did you guys hear about that? He's been a really good player for us, but I think he's as good as gone.

I think there will be just as much free agent activity as usual this year. It will just be compressed into a shorter time frame. Teams will do what they think they need to do. It's the same with coaches. I heard at least one writer speculate last year that there would be fewer coaching changes because of the impending lockout, because it would put new coaches at a disadvantage. But no team is going to hang onto a coach they don't want and pass on a coach they want. You get the best guy to do the job, period.

Teams will take the same approach to free agency this year. They've done their homework, and if and when the lockout ends there will be a free agent flurry like we've never seen before.

Which players have been complaining about the NFL teams doing for years (and his brother got cut because he's contract was too much and he hasn't been staying healthy)

Where if he signs a front loaded contract it's much more likely he'll get the big money. So a front loaded contract is better for the players if it's the same amount ether way...

But also remember just because a player said it was a discount, doesn't mean it is a discount from market value... sometimes market value is lower than a guy thinks for his talent and so the discount really isn't a discount at all, the player just doesn't know that yet.

The article and/or Jenkins didn't talk about amounts so it's no way of telling if it was really a discount or not. But you got to remember some guys are just trying to sell them selves or their side of things.
