porky didn't say a kicker never EVER sticks with one team for 20 years. He asked how many, implying that it's not too often, in which he's correct.

Next to that, it's not as much about going to keep him for 15 years, as it is having the option to keep him for another 15. With Longwell, you're going to have to pick up a kicker soon. Viking fans don't call him "Shortwell" for nothing. He's a great kicker, but his leg strength isn't amazing and has been dropping for a while, now. Crosby isn't a great kicker by any means, but at least you can attempt those 55 yarders in the freezing cold at Lambeau and actually have a shot at making them.

And keep having that possibility for the next 15 years.

Normally, I'm the one who's overly technical, lol.

Jason Handson would like a word with you. Phil Dawson isn't going to make the 20 years, but he's been kicking for the Browns since '99. Janikowski has been the Raiders kicker for 10 years... Although they might be somewhat stuck to him, picking him in the 1st round and all.

The grass is always greener in the NFL, it seems. The biggest reason that kickers get cut appears to be when missing an important fiel goal, regardless of how they've been doing. Best example might be Shayne Graham. Amazing kicker for the Bengals, misses two "clutch" field goals, gets replaced by Mike Nugent. A good kicker in his own right, but not exactly an upgrade or anything.

I think our staff is one of the more sensible ones. If they like Crosby, they'll keep him around. I don't know if they'll just scapegoat him like a lot of teams do to their kickers and kick him to the curb.

Actually, I would not be shocked if Longwell is still in the league by the time Crosby leaves the Packers.

I don't care about attempts. He needs to make these kicks period. He has not. He missed in Minnesota in 08. He had one block in Chicago in 08. He did not have a great 09 season. He missed a game winner in Washington in 10 and that nearly cost the Packers the playoffs in the end.

Crosby has one signature moment. That was his first game against the Eagles. Beyond that, he's been average to below average.

I'm not putting Longwell up there as one of the best kickers in the league right now. There seems to be a reaction every time somebody places a player on another team ahead of a current Packer. This is more about Crosby as one of this team's biggest weakness than it is about Longwell.

In the end, I rather take my chances that the Packer offense can get into range for Longwell than have Crosby kick a 50-plus yard field goal. Yeah, he'll attempt it, but a miss is a miss.

Also if you can run more offensive plays to closer for Longwell why don't you also have that as an option with Crosby? Inside 40 yard distances both kickers are pretty good...

If our receivers would stop dropping so many passes, or our offensive line would learn to block worth a damn so that we didn't stall so often on third down (yes, I just got done watching the Super Bowl again, and our offensive line was TERRIBLE in that game), maybe Crosby wouldn't have to attempt so many long kicks.

I take that back. Our offensive line was beyond terrible. The were horrendous. Rodgers was hit 16 times in his first 34 dropbacks. That is pathetic. Amazingly, Crosby only attempted one field goal that entire game.

That's going to happen against a team like Pittsburgh when you pass that often. It wasn't pretty to watch, but it wasn't terrible either. You're the first person I've heard make that claim.

A miss is a miss when the clock expires. Doesn't matter where the attempt came from. If you miss a kick in a 16-17 game when time runs out, you lose, so Crosby's 50-plus yard range means nothing in the end if he can't make the kick. Up to this point, he has proved he cannot make that kick when his team needs him the most even from inside 40 yards out.

I much rather have the Packers take the ball with two minutes left knowing they need to make it a 40 yard FG attempt. I want efficiency and clutch more than I want a big leg.

The only argument here is that Crosby can kick a ball 60 yards. He can, but he can't put it through the goal posts. What good is that weapon then? The result is zero points.
