Green Bay Packers throwback uniforms much more befitting of pro football nobility than green and gold

Most of you arent going to like what youre about to read here. Some of you might even be driven to use my mug shot as a bulls-eye for your dartboard, or rush to lay it on the floor to paper-train your puppy.

So if you love the Green Bay Packers traditional green and yellow uniforms, and dont want your blood pressure to soar, skip to the next column.

This past Sunday offered one of the best atmospheres in years for a Packers game at Lambeau Field.

It was almost perfect Packers weather to play a team from the West Coast: Raw and overcast, although this wuss sat indoors. Special recognition was given and deservedly so to the Acme Packers and that bygone time when the team was sponsored by the local packing company and played on a sandlot field. And Go! You Packers Go!, the team fight song written in 1931 that was a favorite of the old Lumberjack Band, was played over the public address system prior to kickoff.

The band for Sundays game, Martys Goldenaires Senior Drum and Bugle Corps of Bessemer, Mich., took you back in time, as well. Not only were they lively and different and entertaining, they almost made you wish that you had come to the game in one of those old raccoon coats that people wore to football stadiums in yesteryear.

But the best part of all Sunday were the throwback uniforms worn by the Packers; uniforms patterned after the ones the team wore when it won its first NFL championship in 1929.

For the first time in more than 50 years, the Packers donned uniforms befitting their great tradition.

The Packers regular uniforms are among the ugliest in the league. The Chicago Bears uniforms, for example, fit the teams image and history perfectly. So does Detroits or, at least, their uniforms fit the image of the old Lions.

Those two teams dress like they belong in the Black and Blue Division.

But mustard yellow? It might be a nice color for a prom dress, but for a football uniform? No, take that back. Mustard yellow wouldnt look good on anybody anywhere. And what does the G on the helmet stand for? Greenbay? Is that where the Packers are from?

My favorite Packers jersey of all time was the hunter green and gold that the Packers wore in 1951. But the blue and gold throwbacks, along with the chocolate helmets, worn Sunday would be a close second. Maybe theyd look better with a large number on the front in place of the smaller number and circle. And a small GB logo might dress up the helmet. But the design and color scheme fits a team that exudes pro football nobility.

In late 1993, the Packers considered changing their uniforms to gold, along with their dark green, but abandoned the idea after Ted Thompson, then an assistant in the pro personnel department, modeled it in front of Bob Harlan, Ron Wolf and others in Lambeau Field.

They rejected it, in part, because Harlan and Wolf didnt like the look, but also because fans seemed to be overwhelmingly opposed to change. And fans were downright outraged over the prospect of the Packers changing the teams primary color from green to blue, even though blue was the Packers original and primary color for most of their first 40 years. The team was even called The Big Bay Blues back in the early 20s.

But heres my argument if youre one of the fans who still feels that way.

The current Packers jerseys essentially date to 1959, Vince Lombardis first season as coach. No doubt, he approved the colors and design if he didnt pick them out.

Well, guess what?

Lombardi was color blind. He might have been the greatest coach ever, but nobody ever called him dapper.

On the flip side, the original 1929 jerseys would have been chosen by Curly Lambeau, a ladies man who always dressed to the nines. When he was coaching and playing for the Packers in the 1920s, he was a store salesman for Stiefels, a mens clothing store that was a fixture on Washington Street when downtown was Green Bays shopping hub.

So tell me now which of those two men would you want choosing your fashions?

Is he being literal here? Was Lombardi in fact color blind?

I love these throwbacks and hope to see them again. They just scream old school, blood and guts Packer football. Maybe put regulation numbers on the front of the jersey and the old Lombardi baseball hat GB logo on the helmet? Or stay with no helmet logo. And lets stop calling the helmet color chocolate, how about mahogany. A little more manly.

BTW, great find on the article. Our babysitter was at that game and said the jersey's look awesome in person, but not the pants or helmets. On tv and pics, I was actually partial to the pants and helmets but did not care for the jersey's. I can totally understand the author's thinking and point of view. Ijust happen to like our uni's the way they are. (I did really like Wolf's design in '93 - sharp)

Zero2Cool (5h) : Packers have claimed DE Spencer Waege off of waivers from the 49ers and waived DT Rodney Mathews.
Zero2Cool (6h) : And the OL protections seem to be good.
Zero2Cool (6h) : I really don't know lol. I don't see him getting blown up.
Zero2Cool (6h) : -3 buwahhhahaaha
Mucky Tundra (7h) : 4th
Zero2Cool (7h) : because he's 1st
Mucky Tundra (9h) : Myers isn't even the 3rd best C on the roster atm
Martha Careful (10h) : I am not sure I understand the Myers hate. He was consistently our third best lineman. RG and LT were worse.
beast (14h) : Just saying I don't think moving Myers would help Myers.
beast (14h) : Center is usually considered the easiest position physically if you can handle the snap stuff.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : Bust it is then
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Context. Sounds like Myers won't be cross-trained. C or bust.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : @BookOfEli_NFL Packers pass game coordinator, Jason Vrable said that Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks shared a placed in Florida while train
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : For now...
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers go about evaluating their "best five," OL coach Luke Butkus makes on thing clear: "Josh Myers is our center."
beast (8-May) : Though I'm a bit surprised letting go of CBs, I thought we needed more not less
beast (8-May) : It was confusing with two DB Anthony Johnson anyways
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers actually had Ray Lewis on the phone.
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers wanted to draft Ray Lewis. Ravens stole him.
Martha Careful (6-May) : Happy 93rd Birthday to the Greatest Baseball Player of All-Time...Willie Mays
Zero2Cool (6-May) : Walter Stanely's son
buckeyepackfan (6-May) : and released CB Anthony Johnson and DL Deandre Johnson and waived/injured WR Thyrick Pitts (thigh-rick).
buckeyepackfan (6-May) : The Green Bay Packers have signed WR Julian Hicks, OL Lecitus Smith (luh-SEET-us) and WR Dimitri Stanley
Zero2Cool (6-May) : Petty, but it's annoying me how the NFL is making the schedule release an event.
Mucky Tundra (4-May) : @mattschneidman Matt LaFleur on how he tore his pec: “Got in a fight with the bench press. I lost.”
Zero2Cool (3-May) : Jordan Love CAN sign an extension as of today. Might tak weeks/months though
TheKanataThrilla (3-May) : Packers decline 5th year option for Stokes
Mucky Tundra (3-May) : @ProFootballTalk Jaylen Warren: Steelers' special teams coach has discussed Justin Fields returning kicks.
Zero2Cool (2-May) : Season officially ending tonight for Bucks ... sad face
Zero2Cool (2-May) : Giannis Antetokounmpo is listed as out for tonight's game.
dfosterf (2-May) : Surprisingly low initially is my guess cap wise, but gonna pay the piper after that
dfosterf (2-May) : The number on Love is going to be brutal.
Zero2Cool (2-May) : May 3rd. Extension day for Jordan Love. (soonest)
Zero2Cool (1-May) : USFL MVP QB Alex McGough moved to WR. So that's why no WR drafted!
earthquake (1-May) : Packers draft starters at safety ever few years. Collins, Clinton-Dix, Savage
beast (1-May) : Why can't the rookies be a day 1 starter? Especially when we grabbed 3 of them at the position
dfosterf (1-May) : Not going to be shocked if Gilmore goes to the Lions.
dfosterf (1-May) : I hear you dhazer, but my guess would be Gilmore Colts and Howard Vikings from what little has been reported.
Mucky Tundra (30-Apr) : S learn from McKinney who learns from Hafley who learns from the fans. Guaranteed Super Bowl
Zero2Cool (30-Apr) : could*
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Safeties should learn from Xavier.
dhazer (29-Apr) : And what about grabbing a Gilmore or Howard at CB ? Those are all Free Agents left
dhazer (29-Apr) : out of curiosity do they try and sign Simmons or Hyde to let these young safeties learn from, they can't be day 1 starters.
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : I miss having Sam Shields.
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Not that he's making excuses, just pointing it out
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : That's for dang sure. Make our erratic kicker have no excuse!
packerfanoutwest (28-Apr) : having a great long snapper is gold
Zero2Cool (28-Apr) : LaFleur looking like he had some weight. Coachin will do that lol
Zero2Cool (28-Apr) : Thanks Mucky and whomever created topcos for each pick!
Zero2Cool (28-Apr) : Insane about Kingsley
