I know I'm definitely not missing your point, Wade. I just don't agree with it. I have wanted Harrell gone for two years now, and I was highly disappointed he made the final roster this year. By bringing him into camp next year, we clutter up a roster spot that could be opened for someone who is more reliable and available, even if he may not have as much talent. Talent is useless if it's not expressed on the field.

The Ron Wolf quote cited by Shawn is another way of saying, "Hire slow, fire fast," a maxim I firmly believe in. In the long run, you are better off cutting a player too early -- even if he later does well for another team -- than hanging onto him even one season too long.

Yes you did.

I don't have a problem with people saying he should have gone before the final roster this year was made. I'm not taking issue with *that* position.

I'm taking issue with the argument that this ACL offers further evidence on said position.

My point is that the ACL tear is not further evidence of said fact. Unless it's the conditioning point which twinkie postulated, no one has yet explained to me why Justin's "track record" means he was more susceptible to losing time because of a torn ACL than any other player.

You may have been right before last Sunday. But Sunday's injury doesn't make you any more right, or any less right.

Kris Jenkins tore the same ACL for the second time. A previous ACL is probably a good indicator of future risk for another one. A back injury is not. A biceps injury is not.

Show me how having a back injury or biceps injury history makes ACL tears more likely. Are we saying people who have bad backs are genetically inclined to have ligaments that tear in the knees? Are we saying that because maybe some other players are "tough enough" to play through back pain like Harrell's that they're also tough enough to play through a tear of the ACL? I'd love to see some empirical evidence on any of those arguments.

I see what you are saying, Wade. It is a valid point. That's why I thought Harrell deserved some slack for the back injury. It had nothing to do with the torn biceps from the previous year. But then the back injury became a three-year ordeal, and now he's torn his ACL. While it is not as bad to have injuries in multiple places as it is to have one recurring injury, Harrell's injury history suggests that he is fragile and a slow healer. Put that together with the fact that this latest injury has a very long recovery time, and it seems unlikely that he will be worth keeping next season.

I think you may be beating up a straw man, Wade. I don't think anyone on this forum is actually saying that Harrell's ACL injury in and of itself makes him a dangerous bet for keeping around. I think what almost everyone -- certainly I myself -- is saying is that this latest injury is simply one more piece of evidence that either a) his conditioning is not acceptable to play football on the NFL level or b) his body is simply too fragile to withstand the rigors of the game or c) both. Harris is recovering from a far more severe injury and I'm not calling for him to be cut, merely that he be brought back slowly and cautiously to ensure he is capable of making it through the season and that he is not lost prematurely.

Comic books are an exaggeration of reality. For example, someone like Wes Welker is like Wolverine-lite. For him to return from the injuries he sustained last year (two knee tears + shoulder tear if I remember correctly) and start, and catch 2 TD passes 3 months before doctors even wanted him on the field is amazing.

Harrell is the opposite. He is like that glass dude that Samuel L Jackson played when he was the bad guy in that one movie with Bruce Willis. What's next for Harrell? His left leg to fall off while riding an exercise bike?

Sorry for being mean. I'm sure he's the nicest guy in the world and all, but come on. This guy's injury history is like Al Capone's criminal record.

I'm with NSD here. Either the guy has two few hit points to play in the NFL or he's not conditioning enough to be in the NFL.

For the record, conditioning is a huge part of it. Welker's conditioning level is on par with Donald Driver. Both of them have absolutely sick work ethics, although Jerry Rice has even them beat.

I sincerely doubt Harrell's work ethic is even close to Welker's or Driver's. Not trying to be a jerk. Just trying to be realistic.

We've been paying this guy millions a year to get rehabilitated and not play the game. Time to shake hands and say goodbye, then wish him the best of luck on his next team or more than likely, in his next career after the NFL.
Mike McCarthy has said over and over again how seriously he takes accountability and availability. I'm starting to call bullshit on the latter.

Wade, I've said this before: You should definitely be a defense attorney. You almost had me convinced that Justin Harrell is not injury prone.
