Re: the bolded part above -- totally true, and I really think that Thompson's coming to a point in his career @ GB where he needs to prove that he actually can play the Free Agents game. Dude's a killer when it comes to the draft, but (JMO, here) we're stuffed to the gills with young talent and potential. Potential is all well and good, but I want to see him show he can court and land some proven NFL players.

I know, I'm crazy.

Same page.. I half expected a spot or two of free agent adds this past season.. I wonder what a bulldozer of a left guard would do for this offense this year.. or another DT to help take up some of the slack in the rotation.

If I'm GM, I understand that the draft is not in place to improve this current team, so much as it's in place to improve the team 2-3 years down the road. So the first thing I do is look at what players may need to be replaced. Here's the current list of players whose contract is up after next year.

WR Greg Jennings
OG Daryn Colledge
OG Tony Moll
OT Chad Clifton
C Jason Spitz
DL Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila
DL Johnny Jolly
DL Aaron Kampman
DL Ryan Pickett
CB Will Blackmon
SS Charlie Peprah
FS Nick Collins

Now, some of those guys will be extended before their contracts are up, but it's pretty clear that the holes that will need to be addressed are along both the offensive and defensive line. More specifically, I think I might be looking for a long term replacement for Chad Clifton. If I can find a suitable replacement, I'll let Chad go after next year and work on resigning most of the other guys on that list.

Didn't vote because I do not know who is available.
If the 5 teams in front of us all pick a DT and there is a sure Pro Bowler LB I just may go there even if the need isn't very great.
The Packers could use more help on the OL, DL and at Corner. Those are the places I would like to pick a place if it makes sense.

I'd go with the best available player at a position we need. It does no good drafting the best player if he plays a position you have quality depth for already (I'm looking at you, Matt Millen). We should focus on both lines (guard was my choice above) and maybe DBs or a RB.

I think I should have named it a slight bit different.. my first post did a better job, which was; which position do you instruct your scouting staff to focus on...

Welcome to the Mike Sherman School of Thoughtlessness.

A) If you NEED a rookie to shore up your problems you STILL have a problem.
B) The NEED for a good player is always there even if you look pretty good right now. We had the deepest DL in the NFL just one short season ago.
C) Going for a player at a position of NEED just narrowed down like 20 other positions you may not have need for today and now your picking out of a crowd of maybe 10 players at two positions.
What THEN happens is your thinking narrows to which of these TEN guys (or whatever) are the best and ignore the 100 other guys of whom a few may be twice as good as the best in that ten but you aren't focused on THE OVERALL PICTURE.

Going after a player of need creates a chain reaction of chasing your tale. The next thing you know your short good players and theres' NEED everywhere.

How'd drafting a receiver every year work out for Detroit? At some point you HAVE to address your needs. You can't wish them away by drafting a position you already have plenty of. Every draft pick is not supposed to be a project. You're an idiot if you look at the first round each year and think those teams in the top half aren't expecting the players they drafted to come in, play, and make an impact. Or maybe you think we should draft WRs and QBs next year with our first few picks if they're the best players left?

dhazer (29-Apr) : out of curiosity do they try and sign Simmons or Hyde to let these young safeties learn from, they can't be day 1 starters.
