The Favre-Manning QB Records thread got me thinking.

Records are a funny thing because so much depends on the era you play in too. For example, hockey, would Gretzky have 200+ points in a season in the mid 1990's with the trap game, unlikely - Thats why IMO, Jagr is very underrated, he put up 100+ points in that trap era. Look at baseball and HRs in the steriod era - "chicks dig the longball". Now hte same with pitching, 4 No-Hitters, there is something obviously going on. It is obviously a QB's game nowadays with the rules changes.

This is stupid:

1. Matt Schaub HOU 4770
2. Peyton Manning IND 4500
3. Tony Romo DAL 4483
4. Aaron Rodgers GB 4434
5. Tom Brady NE 4398

+ Brees, Favre, Big Ben, Rivers, E. Manning all over 4,000 too - 10 QBs, 30% of the NFL. PLUS five QBs with a 100+ rating in 2009.

In 1999, there was ONE 100+ rating and FIVE 4,000 yard QBs. Now its doubled. In 2005, there were two 100+ ratings and two 4,000 yard QBs. You can't even say that the players today are better because 90% of those 4,000 yard guys were around in 2005.

Anyone else find this alarming???

I wouldn't say alarming. It's just how the game has evolved. Like how basketball has become a game played at the rim, not as much about shooting anymore. The passing game is a lot easier to succeed at than the running game, so take advantage of that. It's also the more exciting aspect of the game when it comes to delivering entertainment value, which is the true goal of the NFL. What I find alarming when looking at the stats is why all of a sudden 2007 became the oddity. I went back as far as 1992, and previously the most 4000 yard passers was 5, and happened multiple times. Then all of a sudden there were 7 in 2007. I tried to coorelate it to the rule changes, but I couldn't pick anything out to contribute that much. I just think as more teams have succeeded with pure passing games like the Colts, that more teams are emulating it. Between the 2008 and 2009 seasons is where we saw the biggest jump in number of 4000 yard passers, from 6 to 10, that's crazy!!!!

To me passing yards is one of the most over rated stats as a losing team often racks up the passing yards like Kitna did with the Lions

I agree that the accumulation type of stats are not that impressive. The accuracy and production stats are more important. Like TO-TD ratio, TO-Yards ratio, completion percentage and rating.

13 of 15 of the top rated QBs in the history of the NFL are active players.
(Favre is not one of them, but Rodgers is, at number 1)

Not a Lions fan, but I kind of admired Kitna. He could take a punch and still come out and perform. I think if you took him and traded places with Brady, Tommie wouldn't have done as well in Detroit and probably not finished the season. Kitna would probably have as good of a year as Brady did in NE. Just look at how well Cassell did for NE. Then he sucked big time in KC.
I want to go out like my Grandpa did. Peacefully in his sleep.
Not screaming in terror like his passengers.

Exactly. Yards don't mean as much as TDs. I'll take 30+ TDs over 4000 yards any day of the week.

As a Favre fan, Manning can have Favre's yards record. I wouldn't care. I'm hoping though that Favre keeps playing to put the TDs record out of reach. Now of course if Aaron stays a Packer and breaks Favre's TD record, I'd be stoked as that would further a record owned by a Packer.

Just wish Aaron would flip the ball more to TEs than run it in as running it in only counts in fantasy. I'm all about the records.

LOL Zombie we seem to have the same fascination with stats and records, especially td's. I remember being upset sometimes when the Packers rushed it in from the one yard line cause I wanted Favre to get the easy td pass. I believe Favre's 8 30 td seasons is another that will necer be broken

I would think the best, or one of the best gauges of a quarterback is their conversion rate on third and long(7 yards or more). Does anyone have stats on that?

I wasn't trying to knock Kitna as I like him to but the year he had with the Lions where they always lost but usually he threw for 300 yards made me think less of passing yards. To me a big factor is the 2 minute drill. A mark of a great QB is often after playing a piss poor game with no td's and few passing yards they still man up and get it done at the end

Yeah. I can agree with this. I guess that's why the national sport media types love Big Ben. I don't know if that's the case but I remember ESPN doing a thing on QBs and mentioned exactly what you just said.. and they talked how Big Ben was that type of QB.
