Yeah, that hurdle and sack are great to watch. I'm not as well versed as others on here about the OLB and ILB thingies, I just want the best guys out there, doing the damage that needs to be done.

That hurdle-sack was the best play of the entire season, in my opinion. I don't think I've ever seen anyone else do that. Thanks for digging up the video. Even in slow motion, it happened very fast!

Okay, I need someone to enlighten me. Why would Chillar playing OLB necessitate a move of Matthews to the left side? Why couldn't he stay put and have Chillar play left?

I was just about to ask the same question. You beat me to it. My best guess is that they are looking for Matthews, our best pass rusher, to get favorable matchups against right tackles, who are not as good at pass blocking as left tackles are. I think this has been the trend in the NFL in recent years: Put your best pass rusher on the left, so he's not neutralized by the opposing team's best pass blocker.

That's a very good point. RTs are usually a bit better at run blocking and have bigger bodytypes. Something a speed rusher like Matthews could take advantage off, instead of going up against the more agile left side.

Also, you have Cullen Jenkins at RE. Pickett at LE. Jenkins is a pass rushing threat all by himself. He can take on LTs. Pickett is someone who eats up blocks, hopefully keeping both the RG and RT busy. That'd create an enormous advantage for Clay, as LBs generally win against RBs and TEs.

Matthews weighs 260 and Chillar is lucky if he can break 240. I am thinking they want the bigger/stronger guy out there on that left side.

A certain "expert" on LB's kept explaining to me why Chiller would not be a good OLB for us when I suggested it- he went on to tell me that it would never happen- the Pack wouldn't even try it, if my recollection is correct-- I believe we had this conversation in February...

So who was this "expert"? Please don't say it was me.

Rockmolder makes an excellent point about Jenkins being a better pass rusher than Pickett, so it would balance things out to have Matthews on Pickett's side.

And by the way, nobody really answered azrunning's full question, which was why the insertion of Chillar would lead to moving Matthews to the other side. I think it is more-or-less a coincidence. Now is the time to tinker with the defense, so they are making two changes at once. It has nothing specifically to do with Chillar because Brad Jones has also been moved to the right side (at least for now--we still can't be sure that these changes are permanent). It's all about getting the most out of Matthews, who is one of our star players.

We may also see these players swapping sides during games to take advantage of certain matchups and to keep the offense guessing. Attack! Attack! Attack!

I agree that I think that's why they're teaching Chillar the right size first.

But I think they're switching Matthews and Jones side just to mix it up and get them used to rushing from both sides not just one so they can mix and match and switch things up on the fly and get a bit crazier with the movement presnap to add to the confusion for the OL.
