Again, I'm far more worried about having a dominating defense that puts our offense in good field position and an offense that finishes off drives with touchdowns, so we don't have to resort to kicking field goals, than having a field goal kicker with a stratospheric completion percentage.

If our biggest complaint about this team is our kicker's completion numbers, I say that's a good problem to have.

I remember Ryan's last year here, he was pretty inconsistent, and there were lots of fans squawking for him to be replaced. And he was. And now those same fans are screaming that cutting him was one of Thompson's biggest mistakes. You're never guaranteed that bringing in someone new will make things better. It's not uncommon for things to get worse.

If Crosby's problems were having a significant impact on this team's success, I'd say, sure, replace him. But I don't think it's worth trying to replace the kicker who was 6th in the league in completed field goals and 4th in the league in completed PATs. He scored 129 points for us last year. You can count on one hand the number of kickers in the league who scored more points than Mason Crosby.

So we bring in a kicker with a higher completion percentage but an overall lower scoring contribution. How does that benefit the team?

Apples and oranges. Ryan's inconsistancy was greatly exaggerated. He had one bad game, vs the Bears, in 2006, in tornado like conditions. He also had the best net average of any Packers punter in over 20 years.

And I couldn't care less that Mason was 4th in the league in PATs. That just means we scored a lot of tds, which he had absolutely nothing to do with.

Eventually, you're going to face a team that's close to your skill. If that team is an offensive juggernaut with little defense, I can totally agree with your point, but if you face, for instance, the Baltimore Ravens, you're going to need those 6-9 points that your kicker will put on the board.

Now I think that this will work itsself out. Crosby isn't as bad as people make him out to be. I think that he deserves this year, uncontested, to prove himself. Show that he can get more accurate. Last year was the first year coming off a different kicking style. This year, it should all come together.

Active kickers - Career Numbers

One thing to note.. is beyond the Montana wonder and two others.. there aren't many young kickers above 80%. And Crosby is very young on that list... but the number of plus 30 yo kickers is interesting.

Ok, I can't take it any more. What the hell is all this bullshit that we can't bring anyone in for competition, for the fear that he may get rattled, or it would hurt his feelings?

This is the NFL. It is BUILT on competition. This isn't the fucking Girl Scouts. For fucks sake.

I would at least bring in another kicker or 2 for competition. It may make him better or we may find a better kicker. The competition wouldn't worry me. If he can't handle the competition how is he going to handle a game winning field goal with seconds left.
Why is Jerry Kramer not in the Hall of Fame?

BTW... I highly doubt the Packers don't bring in at least another camp leg.. if nothing else to cut down the reps on Crosby.

Only 3 kickers in the league attempted more kicks from 50 or more yards than Crosby last year. None of them had nearly the overall attempts Crosby had -- Josh Scobee attempted 50% of Crosby's total kicks. You get put in the position of having to kick more often, you're also going to miss more often. You guys are ignoring factors such as weather, etc. that factor into a kicker's completion percentage. Without exception, all kickers who were better from 50 yards than Crosby came from warm-weather or indoor teams: Jacksonville, Oakland, Tennessee, Seattle.

Only one kicker (Akers) attempted more kicks than Crosby last year, and he only attempted 3 from 50 yards or more. Whether you want to admit it or not, Mike McCarthy puts Crosby in a position to fail in a way almost no other kicker has to experience. He's the most overexposed kicker in the league. Not only is he kicking more than almost any kicker around, he's also kicking in some of the worst conditions around.

Beef up our offense so we don't have so many 4th and longs, and Crosby won't look so bad.

Again, I'm not opposed to finding a better kicker, but I think a far bigger priority is ensuring our offense completes drives and our defense gives our offense a chance to start with decent field position. Let's use our meager 80 roster slots on those issues. After we're solid along the lines, then we can worry about wasting roster spots on kickers.
