I keep reading of frustration with the Packers lack of non team acquiring free agent method.

I ask you ... who out there should we get or have gotten and why?

QB - set - heck we can even add a veteran backup closer to pre season after cuts are made.
RB - we'll be using a 1st or 2nd or 3rd rounder on a RB this year, either way Grant is coming off back to back 1200 yard years and Brandon Jackson is a solid 3rd down back. What RB should we get? LT? Give me a break. Too expensive for tarnished goods.
FB - were good there.
WR - were good there
TE - were more than good there.
LT - signed a veteran ... we need a young guy to step up here
LG - possibly set if Spitz gets this spot
C - set
RG - set
RT - we'll be signing Tauscher

DL - we're pretty good there with resigning Pickett, and we have Raji who's solid, Jolly who's good, and of course Cullen Jenkins for a solid four man rotation.
OLB - this is where we need someone to step up or fill the void. Clay is solid, but Jones is not a favorite of mine.
MLB - Barnett and Hawk ... I started to like Barnett a little bit here, but Hawk scares me at times as he's supposed to me more consistent.
CB - we have a very solid top three, after that ... it's an unknown if you ask me. Can Lee step up? Can Blackmon step up and stay healthy? Can we tell Bush the Packers stadium moved and give him bad directions so he misses games PHYSICALLY to match his mental lack of showing?
Safety - Collins is resigned, Bigby is 'ehh ok', we need depth here.
K - I'm offering MY services as a kicker, I can nail everything within 30 yards on a high school field with no rush SIGN ME UP!! 😛 KIDDIN i jus dont like Crosby much anymore.
P - this amazes me we can't find someone who can punt a damm ball.

On the offensive side of the ball I feel we need to add another RB (draft or FA) that can provide a change of pace to Ryan Grant. We also need to add some solid talented depth to our offensive line. Spitz - Wells - Sitton is I think a good interior OL. Adding Clifton and Tauscher on the bookends is a bonus. However, we need Lang and another player (Colledge perhaps?) to step up to take their place next season. Don't laugh about Colledge ... I'm going to give him a grain of hope from me personally that if he's focusing solely on LT he can be a good one. He was a LT in college after all.

On the defensive side of the ball we are good on our DL as mentioned. We need to add a starter for OLB opposite Clay. I wouldn't be heart broken if Bishop were to step up and take over for Hawk either. I like Barnett, he's a great motivational leader for the defense. Woodson, Williams and Harris are a very solid top three. After that is where it gets hairy. I'd like to see Blackmon removed from returning kicks/punts and focus on staying healthy and cornerback.

On special teams I think we need to find a new kicker or figure out how to get him to be more consistent. We need a punter, no if's or an's about it. We also need a true return specialist.

Recap ...
- Add back up RB
- Add depth to OL
- Add starter for OLB and depth
- Add punter
- Add return specialist
- Add kicker for competition

Of the area's mentioned of need, we only need one starter, a 3-4 OLB.

What OLB was available or is, that's worth overpaying for?

The rest of these can be added via draft or or after the expensive stage of free agency is over. RB, OL, P, KR/PR, K

I'm just not sure what people are wanting from the Packers. We're a very solid team with some really good starters. We simply need some depth at some positions and continuity.

For gaps that we could've filled in FA, I would go with OT/S/OLB. Maybe not in this class, but normally, that are the places I wouldn't have minded a signing. I don't think that you can really include CB, as we have the depth and starters to develop our own young CB right now. We don't need an expensive FA at the position. RB is another position at which we have the luxury of going with a rookie, rather than an expensive veteran.

Some interesting signings would've been Ryan Clark and Joey Porter.

Now I think that Ryan Clark only went around the country, visiting teams, to gain some leverage. Nothing more than that. It would've been nice to see us show some interest, though. He's one of those good, but not elite guys who we wouldn't have to break the bank for.

I personally think that Porter has something left. If you line him up opposite of Matthews, one will pull the double teams away from the other.

Porter had an amazing season in 2008 and a good one in 2009. He played behind one of the worst 3-4 D-lines in the league with a guy on the opposite side who has nothing left in Jason Taylor.

If we could get Porter here, that'd free us up to go O-line and DB in the first two rounds, in a draft class that is very deep at CB in the 2nd round. The signing makes so much sense.

And that's the only reason I'm slightly frustrated with Ted.

Who have Ryan Clark and Joey Porter signed with?

Ryan Clark resigned with the Steelers. That's why I think it was mainly about the leverage. He visited with the Dolphins before resigning. The Packers showed no interest.

Joey Porter is still out there. The Cardinals have shown interest, they brought him in. No other team did so far. Would love to have the Packers added to that list.

So we would have had to over pay for a backup? I'm not liking that theory at all.

Joey Porter, I'm warming up to the idea of seeing him in a Packers uniform. I'd be game for him. I think if he comes at a reasonable price, he's more than worthwhile to check out.

But this part...its just...well...I wish foster were around so he could tell you how fulla shit it is. :)

RG is set.
We have a reasonably serviceable center in Wells.
We have a hot piece of "potential" in Lang.
And a bunch of guys.

That we have just paid one of those guys (Clifton) 7.5 million to, and probably will pay another (Tausch), doesn't make us set.

Until more action takes place, via free agency/draft/whatever, more action needs to be taken. Being satisfied with only three players who are better than "just guys" is not sound.

And, no I don't have specific names of who the Packers should be going after. I'm not going to bash Ted Thompson for not signing anyone yet. I will likely do so if, when the draft rolls around, he still hasn't.

Because entering the draft with the same OL roster as last year is simply not aggressive enough.

I like your breakdown zero ...

for me the priorities are:
- a KR/PR guy someone whom is a force to be reckoned with
- LOLB - someone again whom is a force to be reckoned with
- Corner (bit concerned about this)
- Safety bit concerned about this
- LT
- RB? ... hmmm not so sure. Wouldnt mind gettting some depth and seeing how he does vs green and jackson thou (and even grant)

I'm not saying our OL is set throughout all five positions.

I'm saying RG and C are set. We have viable players in Clifton and Tauscher for the Tackles and I belive Spitz will do good replacing Colledge.

I'm also saying we need to add depth and future Tackle's to the roster presumably via draft. Which is the point of this thread. We're not going to spend big bucks for someone else's Tackle's when we should be drafting and grooming our own as we have capable Tackles (when Tauscher signs) on the roster.

Entering the draft with similar players on our OL as last year is not that big of a deal. Our OL did fairly well after Clifton and Tauscher were in the line up. Also consider that Clifton won't be rehabbing from FOUR surgeries this off season, instead he's TRAINING for the upcoming season. That should make a positive difference in his play. My issue with Clifton is his false starts and his damn illegal formation penalties.

This is the problem I have. You say we need to be more aggressive but you can not name any names we should be aggressively pursuing! What the hell is that? You can't say we should be more aggressive without a direction. That's almost like saying we should spend money for the sake of spending money to give the perception we're trying.

I don't get this thinking at all.

If the talent isn't out there to aggressively pursue, how the hell is that the fault of the team?

Clifton - Spitz - Wells - Sitton - Tauscher
Colledge - n/a - n/a - n/a - Lang

Again, my thinking of Colledge at LT is a pipe dream at best ... I'd rather see how he does focusing on ONE position, the position he played in college for at least one full season before dumping him.

The back up interior line is where I'm saying we need to add depth to.

I think Lang can be a future RT ... our future LT, honestly I don't think he's on our roster and I believe he's going to be drafted in the next month or whenever the draft is.

S - Our starters are good, Bigby is an excellent communicator. I think we can add veteran depth via free agency here.
LT - draft
RB - draft

I'd have liked for us to go out on a limb and snag Darren Sporles, but I think the price is too high.

Just pointing out that all of you seem to be under the assumption that Al Harris will be fine, and are saying we should plan accordingly. Well, what if hes not fine? Then all of you are going to be complaining about how we didn't go out and get someone as depth. We have tramon and then we have nothing but unknowns.

just sayin ~
