According to Tom Pelissero, Sony’s Hawk-Eye technology will be used by the NFL as the primary method for measuring the line to gain, beginning with the 2025 season, the league announced. The chain crew will remain on the field in a secondary capacity.

What does this mean? It means instead of people walking out to measure off 10 yards, they will now use some kind of technology. However, the measuring of 10 yards was never the issue. It's always been the spotting of the ball. And that is not being changed.

Some mention putting a tracker in the ball to spot the ball. This won't work because of the shape of the ball. They would have to put two trackers in each ball and then calculate the difference. That's right, it COULD be done, but I wouldn't bet on it until 2027 at the soonest.

Actually it would only take six trackers on the ball to be far more accurate than they are now. 2 at each end and 4 around the circumference.

Yeah, I'm just not sure how much you can rely on that though. Plus, those won't be cheap. It's a lot of cost to take out the human element in the game, which causes drama which causes more attention. We're basically asking the NFL to spend six to seven figures to lessen people talking about the game. When we fans are in an uproar, the NFL loves it because it's getting attention.
