Players sounded off this week on last season’s Thanksgiving turkey leg drama

This Thursday the Green Bay Packers  will welcome the Miami Dolphins  to Lambeau Field for a Thanksgiving night showdown on NBC. This will be the second year in a row the Packers play on Thanksgiving after they beat the Detroit Lions  29-22 last season . While it was a great win for the Packers, it will also be remembered as the day that Jordan Love was denied his turkey leg.

The turkey leg has become an NFL Thanksgiving tradition over the years thanks to the late John Madden  and his Turkey Leg Award that was started in 1989. It’s been renamed over the years and is now known as the Madden Player of the Game and is awarded to the MVPs of the winning teams of the Thanksgiving games. The players receive a $10,000 donation in their name to a youth or high school football program of their choice and are presented post-game with a turkey feast to chow down and revel in their spoils...however, no revels were to be had for Jordan Love last Thanksgiving.

Love, who was awarded the Madden Player of the Game, did not get a turkey leg after the win. Instead, FOX sideline reporter Erin Andrews noted in the post-game interview that he’d just be getting the donation made on his behalf. The other teams that won last Thanksgiving, the Dallas Cowboys  and San Francisco 49ers , were given post-game turkeys leaving the Packers as the odd team out. And no one really seems to know why.

Fans noticed immediately  and it led to memes, conspiracy theories , and Packers running back AJ Dillon even started selling [URL=https://go.redirectingat.com?id=66960X1516590&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.jsonline.com%2Fstory%2Fsports%2Fnfl%2Fpackers%2F2023%2F12%2F06%2Fpackers-aj-dillon-calls-out-fox-with-shirt-for-not-giving-jordan-love-turkey-leg-thanksgiving%2F71812841007%2F&referrer=sbnation.com&sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.acmepackingcompany.com%2F2024%2F11%2F26%2F24306859%2Fgreen-bay-packers-news-jordan-love-turkey-leg-thanksgiving" rel="sponsored nofollow noopener" target="_blank]“Turkey Gate” t-shirts[/URL]. There was so much uproar that former NFL tight end and current FOX analyst Greg Olsen took to Twitter  to defend himself after people accused him of ripping up what should have been Jordan Love’s turducken earlier in the game.

One year later, it seems players haven’t forgotten Turkey Gate. According to Matt Schneidman of The Athletic, tight end Tucker Kraft had some words on the drama after Tuesday’s practice. He called out Olsen for ripping the turducken apart before declaring, “We’ll make sure Jordan gets it this year.”

Tucker Kraft on Jordan Love not getting a turkey leg in Detroit last year:

"Pretty sure Greg actually ripped into it, right? He started eating it before we got an opportunity. We’ll make sure Jordan gets it this year. We’ll make sure about that."
— Matt Schneidman (@mattschneidman) November 26, 2024

Kraft wasn’t the only teammate talking about Turkey Gate this week. While chatting on 97.3 The Game in Milwaukee , AJ Dillon brought it up saying that FOX still owes Love for the oversight and that NBC needs to “do it right” this week. “We don’t forget,” he added.

While it is still unclear why FOX had no turkey ready, one can only hope NBC can repair the turkey leg-shaped hole that’s been left in the team’s collective stomach. But before that can happen, the Packers gotta take care of business against an ascending Dolphins team in the lights on the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field.

The only way for FOX to make up for stiffing Jordan last year is to have a courier deliver a post game turkey with all the trimmings to Jordan. It will have to be bigger than the one NBC is going to present.

bboystyle (16h) : The Green Bay Packers on Monday signed Taylor Elgersma, the Canadian-born quarterback who tried out at the team’s rookie camp last weekend
beast (17h) : There were reports four days ago that the Packers were signing QB Taylor Elgersma, but no official action since
Zero2Cool (18h) : And for Ian Rapoport to announce Saints send 1st and 2nd rounder to Packers for Malik Willis.
dfosterf (18h) : *Elgersma*
dfosterf (19h) : Today would be a good day to discover the Pack signed Taylor Engersma, the Canadian QB
Zero2Cool (11-May) : It wasn't. He simply wanted his money back. They refused. Cops came. They gave him his money in end.
dfosterf (11-May) : Fortunately it doesn't sound like a big deal
Zero2Cool (10-May) : Elgton Jenkins Involved In Strip Club Dispute ... Cops Called To Mitigate

beast (9-May) : Technically, the I in FIB stands for Italian now, Si?
dfosterf (8-May) : I never thought I'd live long enough to call a pope a FIB, but here we are
Martha Careful (8-May) : Chicago produces a pope before it produces a 4000 yard passing quarterback
wpr (8-May) : HAHAHA Mucky Comment of the day.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : According to reports, Mel Kiper is furious that Sanders wasn't selected as the new Pope
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Time taken to get picked:
Zero2Cool (8-May) : New Pope: 2 days | Shedeur Sanders: 3 days
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Collin Whitchurch @cowhitchurch · 1h Chicago got a pope before it got a QB to throw for 4,000 yards in a season.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : New Pope from Chicago; in other words, the city produced a Pope before a 4000 yard passer

Zero2Cool (5-May) : Cardinals have signed TE Josiah Deguara.
Zero2Cool (5-May) : If I were to "Google" it, then I wouldn't read it in your words.
Martha Careful (5-May) : Yes, in the military S2’s work on IPB, PERCEC, PHYSEC and IO
dfosterf (4-May) : FYI civilian companies swipe the S2 designation from the military. S2 is the intelligence branch up to brigade level. G2 is division level.
dfosterf (4-May) : Google it. Make sure to tack NFL on it or you will get the military meaning
Zero2Cool (4-May) : S2?
beast (4-May) : Seems like the S2 has a love/hate relationship with professional scouts.
beast (4-May) : In theory, the S2 test how quickly a QBs brain can solve game like issues and how quickly they can do it.
dfosterf (4-May) : Are you gentlemen and at least one lady familiar with the S2 cognition
Zero2Cool (4-May) : Maybe there isn't an issue.
beast (4-May) : NFL really needs to fix their position labeling issue, but I don't think they care
Zero2Cool (1-May) : Packers did not activate the fifth-year options for linebacker Quay Walker, with the goal of signing him to a contract extension.
Zero2Cool (1-May) : Matthew Golden spoke with Randall Cobb before draft. Looked like chance encounter.
packerfanoutwest (1-May) : from a head left turn?
packerfanoutwest (1-May) : someone drunk?
Zero2Cool (1-May) : Unlikely.
dfosterf (30-Apr) : How long until Jeff Sperbeck's family sues John Elway ?
Zero2Cool (30-Apr) : Packers are exercising the fifth-year option on DT Devonte Wyatt, locking in a guaranteed $12.9M for the 2026 season.
