Why do you guys refer to the team as "Bucky" ?

Examples:

"Touchdown Bucky", "Important game for Bucky this weekend", Bucky got a raw deal in the new Big 10 division realignment"

I understand that Bucky is the mascot, but it doesn't make sense. It would be like if Brewers fans said, "Tough game for Bernie tonight", or Cardinals fans saying, "Fredbird really has struggled the last few weeks"

I think it sounds stupid. If there is a good explanation for why Badgers fans do this, then I will apologize. But until then, I think its dumb.

Matt Lepay says touchdown Badgers or Wisconsin ( then again I havent heard EVERY TD he has called)

You might have to enlighten me with some quotes from articles or videos, cuz I have never heard it said that way

A lot of the Badgers fans on twitter do this. I asked the same question on twitter and this is one reply I got:

"Its a Wisconsin thing. You wouldn't understand."

Well, considering the lack of response to this thread, I am going to conclude that this is just something stupid that Badgers fans came up with. So, from no on, I will be referring to the Cardinals as Fredbird.

Fredbird needs to get his shit together and start winning some games!

The Badger's mascot's name is Bucky.

Edit, you think it's stupid, or dumb because you don't understand it. The mascot represents the team. Why do people call others by nicknames? To be different, or because the nickname is easier to say or chant. They don't have an explanation for it because there isn't a valid one. Saying it's a Wisconsin thing is a way of saying 'hell if i know but im gonna keep doing it'.

Being a Cardinals fan, now that's stupid. C'mon, root for a real baseball team. Like the Bre... w....er....s ... oh shit I can't even type it. 😉

He knows this. lol

IM, it's a college thing. Same thing with Michigan State.. They often refer to their team(s) as Sparty. Us Minnesota fans do the same some times with the Gophers referring to the team as Goldy.

It's more prevalent with the UofW, though.

just noticed this

He said why do you guys? To me that means a majority if not all Badger fans

Then says lot of people on twitter say it

I think it might just be a internet thing???

As stated before I NEVER heard anyone say it like David is questioning..

I even have a few friends that are alumni

I always refered to the Badger teams as "the Badgers". Never called THEM "Bucky".
It doesn't bother me one bit if others do though.
Bucky IS the mascot, and is very predominant at all the Badger games.

It may be a cultural thing, too. I'm assuming LTF is an older fan. I've grown up in WI, and I've heard alot of fans call them 'Bucky'. And I've been to 4 Gopher/Badger games in the past 7 years or so.. and at every game I see the college kids refer to the team as 'Bucky'.

Probably a college cultural thing.
