For the record.. I have 4 compressed disks in my back and I am in the 315 neighborhood.. however I don't play football anymore... ;)

You know as soon as I finished that post, I was immediately recalling you mentioning back-issues you have had before.

I totally get what you are saying, that if his effort and conditioning are problems then he is wasting a roster spot; we need all 53 players on our roster to contribute if we wanna win it all.

Still, I think McGinn is a little too harsh in his article. I mean even Charles Woodson has stated that he usually reports to camp a little over-weight, and then uses TC to get in shape. It was in one of the articles in the MJS this off-season about him picking up boxing.

I`m fine if Harrell is labouring a little in the early stages of camp. If this becomes more pronounced say, in a couple of weeks... well then I`m gonna start calling for him to be cut as well.

And I will be very honest... I would rather be aggressive and cut this kid a week or two early if he isn't putting in the effort than a week late and him sitting on the IR yet again.

Also I am a little bias this season.. we are a deep team with a large number of talented kids that won't make this roster.. and when I hear a kid perceived as not putting out the effort.. especially with a history... then I lack patience and compassion for said player.

Not to mention the coddling nature our HC has at times.. demand excellence or accept what you get... MM shades on the later at times from what I see.

It it was a lack of effort I bet MM would of said something about it by now.

Harrell is just out of shape and needs to catch his breath more often than the others.

I believe that a lot of anti-Harrell bias is repackaged anti-Thompson bias, and insofar as that is true, I oppose it.

However, my anti-Harrell bias has nothing to do with that. As I have said many times, I want rugged, hardworking players who are available and will contribute. All the talent, flash, and glitz are worthless if they sit on the sidelines. If Harrell is doomed to injury, and his presence on our roster is preventing another journeyman lineman from contributing to our team on a weekly basis, then I want him cut. If he will contribute this year, then I welcome him on the roster until a better player comes around.

But I've had the nagging feeling for the past few years that the front office of this team is often so focused on rescuing their projects that they fail to keep an eye out for talent. I know that's an unjust thing for me to say, but I find it extremely hard to believe that there's no one out there who could contribute more than Harrell, Jackson, or Bigby.

I think this is a big deal about nothing... and you just want to cut him to send a massage......

The kid is working to stay healthy.... give him a break. Interesting how MM has called out other players including DE Wynn yet hasn't said anything bad about Harrell. I think some people don't like Harrell and there for like to bad mouth him...

Why? The raison d'tre for the Green Bay Packers is not to amass a roster of nice guys to make them rich. It's to win championships. I think we lose sight of that sometimes.

As fans, we need to stop having so damn much compassion on these nice guys. They're making incredible sums of money. They should be held to the same standards of availability we are. I know a girl who was fired from both her jobs after she injured her back, yet Harrell has stuck around literally for years, collecting in excess of $15 million for playing in a whopping 13 games.

I am a firm believer in the philosophy of "hire slow, fire fast." It works.

Please read this again..

I will simplify my cut comments.

We have a kid that has been paid very well and has been injured most of his NFL career to date. Some of the injury issue is just bad luck.. however some of it is helped along by not being a conditioned athlete.

I firmly believe the above to be true.

So forward to this off season.. and I am on record of my own comments of hoping this kid makes an impact. Doubt it.. look them up in multiple threads.

He has reportedly been healthy all offseason and has made comments that he feels he owes the Packers because of lost time.. and that excited me at that point.

So now, albeit second hand comments and I haven't seen it with my own eye, that he isn't in optimal shape and "dogging" it in camp..

Now.. lets align those comments.. you have a kid, which if he is a player should be chopping at the bit to play this season.. one in which he claims guilt to the franchise and he isn't lighting it up with effort in camp.

That is what is disappointing.. and if he truly is lacking effort.. he isn't going to make the impact and thus taking reps away from others not to mention sending the wrong message to players on the team.

So my comments about being cut are from the perspective that I am a coach, I see a player on his last straw not putting forth the effort.. have addressed it directly with him and still not seeing the fire I demand from my players.

Some ask why cut him now verse end camp.. because if he goes down again because he isn't in shape we are on the hook for yet another season of salary.. you have to cut your losses at some point..

Now.. if McGinn is way off base, which he could be then it is a mute point.

But remember.. has anyone from within mentioned that Harrell is having a good camp? Haven't heard that either.

I was just asking if showing up to camp out of shape is or is not a sign of a lack of effort.. especially when your extension of career very well may rest upon this camp.

That said.. maybe it is all a mute point and Harrell shines this season.. I would welcome that open arms.. however I will not be betting upon that result if McGinn's observations ring true.

Now.. there is a huge difference between Pickett and Harrell.. one has established himself as a player able to play and stay healthy in this league.. one hasn't.

My simple point is Harrell should be out working every other soul if he was a hungry player itching to play ball after multiple disappointing seasons.. McGinn's article doesn't shade him as such a player.

We're basing a lot of concllusion on very little fact. I want to see how he plays. We'll know more after Sat. and more yet the next week and so on. We've 4 weeks to decide.
