Gruden won a Super Bowl with a Tony Dungy built team.

I think he kind of lucked into that situation. I haven't followed his career closely but after that SB has he done anything else noteworthy ?

I think one reason it's hard to hold a coach to such a high standard is that luck plays such a big role. Injuries are big, obviously, but also just the way that the games unfold, especially in the playoffs. Sometimes there is a clear pattern, like with Marty Schottenheimer's teams choking in the playoffs year after year, but usually it's not so clear-cut. The best a coach can do is to put his team in a position to win, but the players all need to execute and there can't be any bad breaks that are too damaging to overcome.

It always looks afterwards like the Super Bowl winning coach had the perfect touch (unless his name happens to be Barry Switzer), but there are so many factors that are beyond a coach's control.

The '07 season did not end on a fluke play. It ended with our QB throwing a really bad interception.

Anyway, I don't think it's a pattern. I think the Packers have gone about as far as could be expected with their talent level each year--maybe farther than expected in '07, because of some close wins, and not quite as far in '08, because of some close losses. But I don't see any red flags about the coaching.

I had to re-read that. I thought it was from vikesrule or Formo, then seen it says '07, not '09.

I think it's important for the GM to realize whether he has a coach that is capable to win it all so that when the opportunity arises it happens or at least there's a good chance it happens. Coaches that start playing conserative with a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and then let a team off the hook with 4th and 26 probably won't ever make it happen.

2010

I am fired up. I expect a Superbowl win.

Here is my take. This is the last chance for romance for Mike McCarthy and his staff.

Ted Thompson is not going anywhere regardless how this season ends.

14- 2 with a loss in the second playoff game. Ted is safe.

11-5 with a loss in the first playoff game Ted is safe.

The Head Coach however is sliding down a razor blade on a skate board. one slip and he is cut.. This is a make it or break it year for Mike. He gets to the Superbowl or he is gone. Mike could very well be gone unless something special happens with this team, and I think he knows it.

The consensus with many, many, in the media and the NFL in general is the Packers have the nucleus, and the QB to get there.

IF... (And I do not believe it will happen) the Packers do not make it to Dallas....

You can say good bye to Mike McCarthy.

And... I will agree with the move to move on from Mike.

MM's job is safe.
8-8
13-3 - lost CG in OT
6-10
11-5 - lost 1st round of Playoffs

It would take a real bad losing season for his job to be in jeopardy.

EDIT: I should elaborate as RP went through all the trouble to write this thought provoking post.

Starr was fired years after he should have been because he's one of the most loved people in GB, ever. Forrest Gregg got fired because he had 4 chances to produce a winning season. He was 0-4.

Infante got fired because in 4 years, he had 1 winning season and 3 really bad ones.

Holmgren left on his own. Did we want him to stay? Hell yeah.

Rhodes got fired because we simply had too much talent to be 8-8 that year.

Sherman got fired because it seemed we were getting worse every single year. The bottom fell out in '05.

MM had one bad year. He went 8-8 his first year after inheriting a 4-12 team. His second year we came a FG in OT away from the Super Bowl. His third year exposed bad D weaknesses that were corrected last year.

We are headed in the right direction with MM.

beast (8-Aug) : But the Return from IR designations had to be applied by the 53 man cutdown.
beast (8-Aug) : It's a new rule, so it's not clear, but my understanding was that they could be IR'd at any time
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : *had to be IRed at 53
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (8-Aug) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.
Zero2Cool (8-Aug) : Packers star Howton, first NFLPA prez, dies at 95 😔
dfosterf (8-Aug) : Apparently it is too complicated for several to follow your simple instructions, but I digress

Zero2Cool (7-Aug) : Well, not crazy, it makes sense. Crazy I didn't notice/find it earlier
Zero2Cool (7-Aug) : it's crazy how one stored procedure to get data bogged everything down for speed here
dfosterf (7-Aug) : to herd cats or goldfish without a bowl. They reminded me of the annual assembly of our fantasy league
