Now *this* guy was a football innovator. I always get annoyed whenever people talk about Bill Walsh as the great offensive innovator. He wasn't even in Coryell's league.
(Of course, Dr. Z would say that neither is in Sid Gillman's league, but that's another debate for another day.)
I will always believe that if Coryell hadn't been his coach, Dan Fouts probably would have been a second tier or third tier quarterback. Probably a starter for 2-4 different teams. And if Lynn Dickey would have had Coryell instead of Bob Schnelker, he'd be in the Hall of Fame and we'd be saying "Lynn Dickey" in those interminable debates about "top 5 quarterbacks of all time."
Coryell was that good an offensive mind.
