Picking up as possible upgrade over Jolly, that I understand.

It's only the idea of "insurance against Jenkins leaving", an idea I've heard articulated more than once in the after-draft analysis, that befuddles me.

But picking him up because (a) Jolly might be in jail/suspended, (b) he might be better than Jolly, that makes more sense.

IMO, Ted should be doing everything he can to ensure Jenkins doesn't walk. I'll be seriously grumpy if he plays "lets get a little better deal" hardball with Jenkins.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

I'm just saying what makes sense to me. Thing is, all those analysts most likely know better than me. I don't know why we would want to get rit of Jenkins. He could have as many as 6 more years in him after this year. I'm sure that he has 3 more, at least, if he doesn't get injured.

You're not going to get a player without any flaws in the 2nd.

Yeah i'd be nice if they can lock Jenkins up this year, but I see this as more insurance over Jolly then anyone else. If he gets suspended or wants to much money next year we can get away with letting him walk and take a Sup pick while still having 4 solid Bigs.
We are born naked, wet and hungry. Then things get worse.

Ted always has lower roster guys getting ready to play.

Last year the #3 DE was Raji, #4 was rookie Wynn, #5 was Montgomery.

Now Raji can concentrate at NT and relieve Pickett more.
Neal, Wynn, and Wilson will get some reps. Wynn and Wislon will have to fight for theirs.

The expectations for an improved pass rush have gone up.

In a bidding war, some team may offer a crazy amount of money for Jolly or Jenkins. They can only tag one.

On top of everything else, draft picks ARE for the future.

I read an article by a writer for scout.com recently.
He labeled the Neal pick as the worst second round pick in the draft.
Let's hope this guy is wrong.

What was his rationale?

He better bring something to the table that is stronger than that "takes plays off" b.s. that has already been addressed.

<update> He doesn't explain anything, actually.

Worst Second Round Pick

Mike Neal, DT, Purdue (drafted by Green Bay, 56th overall)

The selection of Mike Neal in the second round was surprising. I understand that the Green Bay Packers preferred a defensive lineman who could play the three-technique, rather than a nose tackle like Alabamas Terrence Cody, who was selected by the Baltimore Ravens with the ensuing pick. But to take Neal, a player that was considered at best a fourth round pick, in the second frame was a reach. Personally, I would have rather seen the Packers select a prototypical 3-4 defensive end like Arkansas States Alex Carrington, who was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the third round, 72nd overall.

Weak argument. He wanted us to take another guy who would've been labeled a "reach" instead of Thompson's guy who was labeled a "reach". It'll all come down to their performance on the field.
