Perhaps injury prone is not the word. More the fact that anytime a player needs surgery in College, one is taking a risk on whether that player is going to be durable.

Wow cool vid; thanks for sharing. I like his run style. Running over a few people ...

Wow, after watching some footage on this guy, I am really excited about this pick. I love his style. He runs upright, yet keeps his center of gravity low. He's not afraid of contact -- he runs over people. He has incredible multiple-cut ability -- several times I lost track of where he was, he's so elusive. He has an awesome explosive burst into the open field, where he makes DBs look like fools. As an added bonus, he's taller than most of our receivers (except Finley), so he'll tower over CBs, and he can catch out of the backfield. If he can overcome the effects of his shoulder injury, this could go down in history as one of Thompson's best picks ever.

Also, based on his size and skillset, I could see him being lined up as a hybrid TE. If he shows enough promise, there is a potential he could edge out Havner. This will be an interesting offseason to watch.

I'd like to see that. I remember the Patriots often send their RBs to line up as WRs. Drives opposing DCs nuts.

James Starks

Buffalo Bulls, Division 1 team.

He played in 36 games, ran for 3140 yards on 698 attempts for a 4.5 average, racking up 34 TDs.

He did get a lot better near the end of his college career, before getting injured.

Adrian Nicholas Peterson

Georgia Southern, Division 1 team.

He played in 57 games (including play-offs), ran for 9145 yards on 1378 attempts for a 6.6 average, racking up 111 TDs.

In the NFL, he has played in 106 games, ran for 1283 yards on 311 attempts for a 4.1 average and racking up 8 TDs.

Now I'm not saying that Starks won't be a good player or anything, he has some potential. It's just that he might look a whole lot different in the NFL than on that highlight vid. Especially since his college career has been good, but not great.

Injury prone? The guy hurt his shoulder once. I mean, McGahee was picked even though he tore his ACL and look what happened there.

Starks Could Be Quite A Catch In Sixth Round

By Bill Huber

[img_r]http://media.scout.com/Media/Image/80/805190.jpg[/img_r]Buffalo running back James Starks, who didn't play last season because of a shoulder injury, was a big-time receiver and productive runner from 2006 through 2008. Starks and the Packers agree that he could be a steal.

One of the best pass-catching running backs in the 2010 draft didnt even play in 2009.

Buffalos James Starks, with 127 receptions in his first three seasons, sat out last season because of a shoulder injury that just didnt improve through rehab and was re-injured during the spring game. Finally, doctors discovered he had a torn labrum, and when he had surgery in August, his college career was over because he had redshirted as a true freshman in 2005.

Had he been healthy and added to his impressive resume, Starks almost certainly wouldnt have been an option for the Packers in the sixth round at No. 198 overall.

You know what, he probably would have (been a Day 2 pick) because hes a very talented young man, running backs coach Edgar Bennett said. Versatile, very good receiver out of the backfield, good size, good speed. Its one of those situations where missing last season because he had a shoulder injury probably had something to do with it.

At 6-foot-2 and 218 pounds, Starks is a big back more in the mold of starter Ryan Grant than a true change-of-pace back. Starks, a high school quarterback in Niagara Falls, N.Y., who played basketball alongside Timberwolves rookie Jonny Flynn, is a good athlete. He went to Buffalo as a quarterback and briefly moved to cornerback before settling in at running back. He ran his 40-yard dash in 4.47 seconds at his pro day with a 36-inch vertical and 15 reps on the 225-pound bench press.

I'm a mixed runner. I can catch out of the backfield. A north-south guy, he said. I have a lot of wiggle, most people don't see a lot because I'm usually running downhill. I can catch, I have speed and I'm calm, but a lot of people mistake me as being kind of weak. After I'm playing in a game, you can tell I have a lot more power than people expect. I mean, there's things that obviously I can work on, but I think I'm an all-around back.

He was productive in all three seasons with the Bulls. After rushing for 1,103 yards (4.4 average) and 12 touchdowns with 41 receptions in 2007, Starks rushed for 1,333 yards (4.9 average) and 18 touchdowns with 52 receptions in 2008. For his career, he rushed for 3,140 yards (4.5 average) and 34 touchdowns and added 127 receptions for 898 yards (7.1 average) and three more scores.

That diverse skill-set was noticeable as Bennett and the scouts poured over the tape from Starks 2007 and 2008 seasons.

Very good size, good speed, has power, can make people miss, and like I said earlier, hes a good receiver out of the backfield, Bennett said. I think hes got good versatility. Thats something that jumps out at you. I guess you can also look at the fact that hes a very, very good athlete. Youre talking about a kid that first came in as a quarterback and played receiver, as well. Hopefully, all of that will help him in his transition coming to this level.

All of which makes Starks who says hes 100 percent -- feel like hes one of the steals of the draft. Brandon Jackson, a second-round pick in 2007, has been solid but hasnt produced much explosion with the ball in his hands. Starks ability to fit in a zone-blocking scheme and his skills as a receiver both on checkdowns and sometimes featured split wide give him a chance to upgrade an already-dangerous offense.

I'm going to go in and give my all, he said. I'm very confident in my ability. I'm going to prove to those other people that I'm healthy. I'm going to do a lot of things that whoever said I couldn't do, I'm going to show them that I can do it. I just can't wait to start working and do everything I can to help the Green Bay Packers.

beast (8-Aug) : But the Return from IR designations had to be applied by the 53 man cutdown.
beast (8-Aug) : It's a new rule, so it's not clear, but my understanding was that they could be IR'd at any time
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : *had to be IRed at 53
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (8-Aug) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.
Zero2Cool (8-Aug) : Packers star Howton, first NFLPA prez, dies at 95 😔
dfosterf (8-Aug) : Apparently it is too complicated for several to follow your simple instructions, but I digress
dfosterf (8-Aug) : Zero- Did you see what I posted about Voice of Reason and his wife? She posted over at fleaflicker that they are both "In"
Zero2Cool (7-Aug) : Well, not crazy, it makes sense. Crazy I didn't notice/find it earlier
Zero2Cool (7-Aug) : it's crazy how one stored procedure to get data bogged everything down for speed here
dfosterf (7-Aug) : to herd cats or goldfish without a bowl. They reminded me of the annual assembly of our fantasy league
dfosterf (7-Aug) : out on a field trip, outfitting them with little yellow smocks. Most of the little folk were well behaved, but several were like trying
dfosterf (7-Aug) : Yesterday my wife and I spent the afternoon on the waterfront here in Alexandria, Va. A daycare company took about 15 three/four year olds
wpr (7-Aug) : seems faster. yay
dfosterf (7-Aug) : Wife of reason posted on the in/out thread on fleaflicker that both she and vor are in
Zero2Cool (7-Aug) : This page was generated in 0.135 seconds.
Mucky Tundra (7-Aug) : Tbh, I can never tell the difference in speed unless it's completely shitting the bed
Zero2Cool (7-Aug) : Sure does feel like site is more snappy
Zero2Cool (6-Aug) : I thought that was the Lions OL
Mucky Tundra (6-Aug) : Travis Glover placed on IR; seasons over for him
Zero2Cool (6-Aug) : found bad sql in database, maybe site faster now?
dfosterf (5-Aug) : I'm going to call that a good move.
Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : Packers sign CB Corey Ballentine
Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : I'm not sure how to kill the draft order just yet so it's not so confusing.
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : *to be able
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : and because it's not a dynasty league (which makes a lot more sense to be ability to trade picks)
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : Oh I know; I was just exploring and it blew my mind that you could trade picks because of the whole reordering thing
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : Zero, I think I preferred my offer: your 1st for my 15th rounder
Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : Keep in mind, we do a draft reorder once all members locked in
Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : You can have my 12th Rd for your 2nd round
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : Hey i didn't know we could trade picks in fantasy
Mucky Tundra (3-Aug) : Update: Rock has tried a cheese curd, promises it's not his last
Zero2Cool (3-Aug) : watch it!! lol
