I really don't have a ton of issue with it either way... but all I know is it was pretty intense in round one in Wisconsin.. to the point of being almost scary how far some would take it.

Anyway.. reminds me of days long past in Wisconsin.. once the fuss and media attention went away.. so did the protests and honestly the number of Native Americans that invoke the right.

2 Ojibwe bands plan to fish Lake Bemidji illegally

BEMIDJI, Minn. - Two northern Minnesota Ojibwe bands say they will fish illegally a day before the May 15 walleye opener to assert hunting and fishing rights they say are guaranteed by 19th-century treaties.

While similar actions by other Ojibwe bands have sometimes led to tensions and even violence, the Leech Lake and White Earth bands say they're announcing their plans ahead of time to try to avoid that.

The push comes more than a decade after the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe won a similar claim in a landmark U.S. Supreme Court case. The Leech Lake and White Earth bands are making their claim based on a treaty they signed with the federal government in 1855.

Racial tensions were high during the Mille Lacs court case in the 1990s. There were incidents of violence in the 1980s when other Ojibwe asserted their right to spear walleye in northern Wisconsin.

"We don't want to end up like it was in Wisconsin. We don't want to do it at night. We don't want to be sneaking around,'' Leech Lake tribal attorney Frank Bibeau told Minnesota Public Radio News. "We don't want the police out there with riot gear. We don't want drunk people with beer cans, and having a whole bunch of people getting all mad about things. And we don't want to have to waste a bunch of time and money fighting about that. That's nonproductive for anybody.''

The Leech Lake and White Earth bands, which have about 30,000 members, plan to have members fish illegally on the shore of Lake Bemidji on May 14. Bibeau said several hundred Ojibwe anglers could be there. He said he expects some will be ticketed, but that the demonstration will be peaceful.

The two bands could have asserted their claims in the 1990s when the Mille Lacs band did, Bibeau acknowledged, but he said they were distracted at the time by infighting and tribal government corruption.

Tribal attorneys plan to send a letter to Gov. Tim Pawlenty laying out their claim soon.

"The letter that's going to be going out here is - I want to say this politely. We're not asking for their permission,'' Dale Green, who works for the Leech Lake Band's legal department, told MPR. "We're going to re-exert our rights, but ... being good neighbors, we want the governor to talk with us and be aware of what we're doing, why we're doing it, and if he can assist us.''

Peter Erlinder, a professor at William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul, has laid out the case for the northern Ojibwe bands in a paper that will be sent to the governor and other state officials. He said it may be more cost effective for the state to negotiate rather than fight in court.

"We are in a position, I think, to be able to say without much argument that we are correct,'' Erlinder said. "So the question then is, what is it that the state is going to be obligated to do in order to live up to the obligations that were established between the United States government and the Ojibwe Nation in those treaties?''

Some other small Ojibwe bands in northern Minnesota already enjoy treaty-based rights to hunt and fish off reservation. When federal courts recognized the rights of bands in northern Wisconsin in the 1980s, the case also included tribes in northeastern Minnesota.

The Fond du Lac Band quietly exercise its hunting and fishing rights, while the Bois Forte and Grand Portage bands lease their rights to the state in exchange for annual payments of several million dollars.

Green said the treaties from the 1800s may have sold off land to the federal government, but he said the Ojibwe people never gave up their rights to hunt and fish on that land.

"When you view the treaties together, starting with the 1825 treaty and moving to the more current ones, like the 1855, the rights are there for exercising our rights to ... hunt, fish and gather using modern means,'' Green said.

Didn't read the article.. But I know a few people that are 'legally' Native Americans (have the 'cards' to prove it), but don't live with the tribe nor do they do anything with the tribe.. And go deer hunting whenever they want to.\

I get that the Native Americans got the short end of the stick. I understand this. It's a sad story.

But, it was also 300 years ago. Time to move on with your lives and get over it. No more 'treaties', no more government money.. Nothing. Adapt or go the way of the Amish/dodo.. but stop shaming your ancestors.

Well, another way to look at it. Native Americans are supposed to be Nations within a Nation. They're not supposed to adopt to our ways. They're supposed to have the choice to live their old way or join us.

We've violated almost every single treaty we've signed with them. That's just historical fact. Let them hunt and fish on the lands that used to be theirs. At least honor that one treaty.

As for a long time, the Bill of Rights were written a long time ago and I'm sick of today's yuppie scum saying that certain Amendments are outdated. I think you and I agree on this one.

Well, when I said go the way of the Amish, what you said is what I had in mind. I wish I remember the numbers, but I did some work on a 'reservation' south of the TC.. And we found out how much money each individual tribe member got. It's ridiculous.

I remember all the hard feelings that the last fishing war brought. I hope this one is not as bad.

I think it's rediculous. The treaties were signed because Indians lived off the land back then, and they NEEDED to fish and hunt to survive.
That isn't the case today. And, if they want to use the treaties signed back then, they should have to use the same implements as they did back thern. No modern spears, boats, motors or lights.

I mean....heck.......do they want the same outdated laws for their casinos that they had for their casinos back then?
Oh...wait.....nevermind.

Zero2Cool (2h) : Johnson didn't make it until 2020. Ring 2023. 🤷 Personally, he should have been in years prior to Hall.
Zero2Cool (2h) : HUMP DAY
beast (2h) : Guys that have a good shot at making the NFL Hall of Fame usually get into their teams pretty fast
beast (2h) : Yeah, but is Kampman and the others in the NFL Hall of Fame?
Zero2Cool (2h) : Johnson was Hall of Fame, 2020. Should haev been in Ring a year later, not three years.
Zero2Cool (2h) : I could be wrong there though
Zero2Cool (2h) : Guys like Kampman, Tim Harris, Al Harris, etc all over 15 years. Hall of Fame is 5 year wait
Zero2Cool (2h) : I guess I see players in Packers Hall come way later
beast (2h) : Yeah, usually teams hall of fames are a much lower bar than the NFL
Zero2Cool (2h) : is it uncommon for Hall before Ring?
Zero2Cool (3h) : S Xavier McKinney named first-team All-Pro by NFLPA
beast (4h) : I missed it, sorry, but he got into the NFL Hall of Fame years before that
Zero2Cool (5h) : Jones took his sweet ole time!
Zero2Cool (5h) : Yeah, he's in the ring of honor, just saw video and his name is up there
Zero2Cool (5h) : Didn't they have a thing in 2023 for Jimmy's ring of honor? I swear I saw it
beast (5h) : Though if they're legitimately trying to re-sign MM, then it makes sense.
beast (5h) : Jerry Jones still hasn't put Jimmy Johnson in the Ring of Honor, but he's in the NFL's Hall of Fame, Jones is petty
Mucky Tundra (17h) : Unless the Cowboys are planning an extension, seems kinda petty
beast (18h) : Cowboys denied Bears request
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : From what I'm reading, MM is under contract through the 14th of January; after that he's free game
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : McCarthy let go or not extended??
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Chicago Bears have asked the Dallas Cowboys permission to interview Mike McCarthy for head coaching vacancy
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : The winners page that is
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : I was not hoping for that. It messes up the page lol
beast (6-Jan) : Thank you, and I was really opening we were going to get 4 or more tied for the top 3.
beast (6-Jan) : Thank you, and I was really opening we were going to get 4 or more tied for the top 3.
beast (6-Jan) : Thank you, and I was really opening we were going to get 4 or more tied for the top 3
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : congrats beast on 2024 !
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : congrats porky on winning 2023 pick'em! (oops sorry)
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : Packers have $60M+ of 2025 cap space on paper TODAY.
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Missed FG into a Lions TD; that'll do pig, that'll do
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : That might be it for the Vikings
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Oh so the refs do know what intentional grounding is
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : what the hell was that Goff?! Not much pressure and he just air mails it to Harrison
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : They really need to to get rid of the auto first down for illegal contact
Martha Careful (6-Jan) : watching the Vikings and Lions it's understandable why they swept the Packers. So much better product
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Even when GB got pressure he was throwing darts; vs no pressure on that last pass he just air mails an open guy
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : didn't have guys in his face ... pressure makes difference
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Where was this Darnold vs GB?
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : BALL DON'T LIE
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : how was that not a safety? Goff throws it at an offensive lineman
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Zero, I thought that was a given! ;)
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Zero I looked through earlier and noticed the same thing. Bonkers year. I just wonder if beast put any money on games
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : I'm hoping for BLOODBATH. Pummel one another.
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : 8 people in pick'em would have won any year with their total lol
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : I'm rooting for the Lions to lose.
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : God help me but I'm rooting for the Vikings to...Vikings to...Christ I can't say it
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : 4 td for Rodgers
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : Chiefs got shutout
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : Rodgers passes for 3rd TD. might be last game of an amazing career
