You don't spike the ball in 5 seconds. Not if your pass traveled further than 2 yards. 10 seconds sounds like a good amount.

Agreed. I don't understand this rule change at all. It penalizes teams for something that isn't their fault, and for this very reason, it disincentizes officials from calling for reviews -- they won't want to be viewed as the bad guys who ended the game because of a 10-second runoff. The article doesn't state this, but I have to wonder if the corollary of this rule is that when there are less than 10 seconds on the clock, reviews will not be called. Quarterbacks will have to get adept at spiking a ball before the officials can call a review, taking, if necessary, an illegal formation penalty by spiking it regardless of who's made it to the line. This could make for some ugly ends to halves.

Just watched the end of the Bengals-Packers game this year.

- Packers start with 16 seconds on the clock
- Rodgers throws a 25 yard pass (35 yard line to 10 yard line) and Driver is down with 11 seconds on the clock
- Rodgers hurries up to the line and snaps it with 2 seconds on the clock
- False start penalty on Finley

So I guess I agree with you for the most part, but it was a 25 yard pass. My question is what if it was a less than 10 yard play? I bet you could line up a lot faster than a 25 yarder.

That's a good point. I didn't really think about the time that the play itsself takes. But that was as fast as you can possibly spike a ball. They didn't even get it off because people wheren't ready. Hence the false start.

We actually spiked it before that one. The play started at 0:36 and we spiked it at 0:17. So that took a good 19 seconds.

Again, I don't know how long the play lasted, but that took a while.

I guess 10 seconds makes sense, but I still agree with non. It seems silly to penalize a team for something they can't control.
