North Korea On Full Combat Alert Against South Korea

by Staff

The South Korean-U.S. joint military exercise began Monday, with North Korea, opposing the drill, asking its troops to be ready for any aggression.

The Korean People's Army "should reliably defend the outposts of the country so as to repel at a single stroke any attempt of the aggressors to make a pre-emptive strike," the military's supreme command said in a report carried by the official KCNA news agency.

The units of the three services of the KPA should be ready "to blow up the citadel of aggressors once the order is issued," said the report quoted by China's Xinhua news agency.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency said the joint exercise, described as purely defensive, is set to go on until March 18. North Korea sees it as a preparation for attack against it, even though no such clash has occurred during past exercises.

The South Korean Defense Ministry said there has been no sign of any unusual military movement in the Communist country, Yonhap said. There had also been no restriction Monday on the border traffic between the two Koreas.

On Sunday, North Korea, protesting the exercise, said it will not cooperate with international efforts for its nuclear
disarmament or hold any dialogue with South Korea or the United States during the duration of the military exercise, the report said.

In January, North Korea expressed willingness to return to the six-nation nuclear talks, which have remained stalled for more than a year since the North conducted its second nuclear test. Besides North Korea, others in the talks include China, the United States, Russia, South Korea, and Japan.

The Xinhua news agency report said many observers had been expecting the talks to resume in the near future. (c) UPI

This latest gambit just makes North Korea look silly. I don't know why they persist on dinging their credibility in the eyes of the world. Then again, it has the desired effect of distracting the U.S. military and keeping us on cautious lookout for a possible nuclear attack, so I guess in that sense they're getting what they want.

Oh sweet, all we need to do is stop this exercise and they'll give their nukes (if they have any left) up.

That being said, I find it amusing that you'd see these stories all over the news when Bush was president but now that Obama's in office, you only hear about wackos wanting to blow us up from Fox and other more conservative sources. Not to say that the converse wouldn't be true as well, but politics have ceased annoying me and have degraded into mild amusement.

North Korea poses a regional threat, not a global threat. Certainly not a threat to the continental United States. As for our troops in South Korea . . . all I have to say is that the first thing you're told when you report to your duty station in Korea is that you're there as nothing more than a speed bump in the event of a flareup between North and South Korea. The soldiers there are fully aware of their role.

And they've been gradually growing as a threat for decades. At some point they will be a global threat in a conventional sense. I could argue that all they need to do is sell a nuke to some terrorists or smuggle a weapon to a U.S. port where it would be detonated upon detection, but that doesn't exactly benefit them in any way. I'm more concerned about when ol' Kim Jong kicks the bucket, and if one of these devices happens to go missing in any potential chaos. Such weapons are quite a bit more dangerous in the hands of those that don't have allegiance to any country, and has no regard for any life if they believe they are doing god's will.

Devices have been missing out of the old Soviet Union for decades, yet none has ever been set off. There are significant logistical, tactical, and psychological barriers to setting off so-called suitcase nukes. Contrary to what a lot of Americans like to tell themselves, these people aren't insane; most of them are, in fact, quite intelligent.

I never said anything about suitcase nukes, that obviously takes quite a bit more technological finesse.

Long story short, I really don't know what to do about North Korea. You're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't. An attack on North Korea in any capacity would be lunacy, they're not interested in diplomacy (unless diplomacy means "Free shit"), and until Kim dies, nothing's going to change. And nothing's likely to change afterwards.

So let 'em rot. If the country is so poorly off, it will eventually collapse from within. šŸ™‚

I'd rather they not collapse, they're real close to China and thus all of our money.

It wouldn't bother me if North Korea collapsed. North Korea is only nominally an independent state anyway; China has that country firmly in its back pocket. Were China to stop subsidizing North Korea with preferential trade agreements and generous foreign aid, its government would collapse almost instantly. China will let North Korea howl like a two-year-old child as long as it is convenient for China (meaning, probably, as long as it keeps the United States distracted). Should North Korea's petulance no longer serve its interest, China will no doubt quietly co-opt Korea as they have almost all the other countries in the region.
