We were told a few weeks ago that Jarrett Bush could be on his way out of Green Bay. This seems like even more of a possibility now that Derrick Martin has agreed to terms on a new two-year contract. [GM] Ted Thompson and [coach] Mike McCarthy value guys who can play special teams, but I dont think therell be room on next seasons roster for two defensive backs who cant play defensive back, opined the same person who told us last March that Aaron Rouse had just about worn out his welcome with the Pack. I expect Thompson to see if he can trade Bush during the offseason. If not, hell probably just release him at the end of training camp.
Bush and Martin are essentially the same player. Theyre both in their mid-twenties. Theyre both capable of playing cornerback and safety. Theyre both set to make over $1 million next season. And theyre both much better on special teams than they are on defense. Assuming Al Harris, Will Blackmon and Pat Lee return from injury, there wont be room for both Bush and Martin, said the source. I think Martin will ultimately get the nod because he was more effective on special teams last season and the coaches still arent sure what he can do in the secondary. Conversely, they know exactly what Bush can do and thats why I think hell be the odd man out. If that happens, you can be sure that thousands of diehard Packer fans will be smiling and wondering what the heck took so long.
