Panthers brass chokes up over Delhommes release

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)Carolina general manager Marty Hurney choked up while calling releasing Jake Delhomme(notes) the toughest decision hes ever had make. Panthers coach John Fox was in tears and pleaded with fans to remember the good moments.

Ending the Delhomme era proved difficultand costlyfor the teams brass.

I stand up and applaud the Panthers for this courageous move. Most NFL managers don't have the guts to release a player so soon after signing a megacontract. Regardless of its short-term financial implications, which will be painful indeed, they made the right move for their organization.
