If we have a draft next year, and the compensatory picks system is still in place, we may get three 5th rounders (the highest available for players 30 and over lost to FA) if Clifton, Kampy and Tauscher all walk.

Pity it will probably be a weak ass class following the bumper group that declared this year, but at least Ted Thompson will have some ammunition with which to trade up if needed.

True, but having those picks in place gives you greater flexibility in trading your other picks.

An excellent point.

Still, it might mean Ted Thompson is happier to use our 4th, 5th, 6th or 7th to trade up.

I like the idea of having a lot of picks. More chances for things to pan out. Look at 2005 - two Pro Bowlers in Aaron Rodgers and Nick Collins. A decent player in Brady Poppinga. Terrance Murphy was looking decent before that injury ended his career.

2006 we had 12 picks. Of those 12 picks, we ended up with 4 starters including Jolly in the 6th who was a really nice find.

I'd be glad for the extra picks. I don't like to call drafts weak because it's all a crap shoot. Some drafts people will think have nothing in such and such position than lo and behold, you got a Pro Bowler where everyone else was saying "who?"

I always thought those compensatory picks were good for taking ST players like a Punter or Kicker. With no Kapinos now, I'm hoping we can get someone like Mesko in the later rounds of the draft.

Sounds like a good idea to me. We should have a 5th or 6th from Colin Cole this year.

It's always nice to have some extra picks.

Like you said, though, it would've been great to have had all those picks this year. This is one deep draft class and with 4 5th rounders, this would've been an ideal situation to trade up with our original 4th, 5th and 6th pick. I wouldn't mind getting into the 2nd round for one of those corners, for instance.

I saw this thread title and thought Ted had already started trading down.

Whew.

Just imagine what kind of draft we could be looking forward to if we had traded Kampman last offseason for picks this year. Ah well.
