Good move in keeping Lang at RT. Best place for him to develop imo.

From the article...

"I feel we have four veteran guys who could start for us inside."

Spitz
Colledge
Wells
Sitton

"I'd like to get Lang down to two positions," he said. "The most important thing for him is the weight room. He needs to get stronger."

Two positions... Left and Right tackle.. which is how they should be grooming him. Let him learn how to block on the edge.. and become good at it.

from the article:

McCarthy said T.J. Lang might work some at guard, but the present plan is to work him mostly at right tackle.

He (Lang) may work at guard if the other four candidates fail.. I have faith in three (excluding Colledge) of them..

They would be wise to work Lang at tackle exclusively.. he has the footwork for the position.

ARGH!

I do hope this is smoke screen aimed at other teams re: draft/FA/trades.

Because if McCarthy is truly content with more than two (Sitton, Wells), he's frickin' loony.

Maybe those guys will prove to be fine. Maybe they'll be great starters in 2010. But no way should he be saying anything to Spitz and Colledge other than "Prove you've got enough, because you haven't come close to satisfying me yet."
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

You have a Pro Bowl caliber RG and a good C, already. O-lines are nearly never made up of elite person throughout the entire line. Spitz isn't an elite player. He's quite good, though, if you ask me.

If you get Spitz - Wells - Sitton out there, we have quite a line. And we might give Colledge a hard time, but he'd be a high-end backup if he does stay in GB.

I'd like Lang to play RT, mainly. The only problem I have is that Tauscher looks like he might be 2 years away from being done. Clifton looks like he's 4 games away from being done. I don't know what they're planning to do at LT, but I just hope that it's a high-pick rookie like Brown....

Sorry Foster. Lol.

You can work with a

LG Spitz C Wells RG Sitton RT Lang

It's LT that's the concern. The Packers are in a tough spot via the draft. Based on what I've seen, they may want to consider trading up. I know it's a deep draft, but I don't think they can get something at No. 23.

Unless they jump on Pouncey as a potential center instead of Wells or Charles Brown at LT. He did beef up a bit, which is good for him.

Sigh.

I fully understand that you aren't going to get a line of five all-pros in 2010.

But if you are content with servicable, you better get used to mediocrity. If all you have at a position is servicable, you ought to be seriously on the look out for improvement every year.

Strive to be excellent and you might just get a dominant line. Be content with "good" and you'll be saying "wait til next year" a lot.

But there's where we don't agree. Sitton is playing on a Pro Bowl level. Spitz was one of our best linemen a year ago, but got injured this year. I always thought of Wells as quite mediocre, but he stepped up as well this year.

The real weak point on that line was Colledge. And he shouldn't be starting next year.

I totally agree with you. Good teams are build from the lines back. You're not going anywhere with a bad O-line. It's just that this interior line isn't the problem right now in my eyes.

That doesn't mean that a guy like Iutapi wouldn't make our line better. He could slide in at LG, I think, and be a productive player. It's just that he wouldn't be that much of an upgrade.
