@jdybs: Any news on Nick Collins yet?

@Greg_A_Bedard : Dead silent. I expect him to holdout for real this year.

So it looks like Collins might be heading towards a hold-out.

I think that he's overreacting. I know that he'd like to get his big pay-day. He most likely would've already if it wasn't for this CBA stuff. He's still making 3.5 million, though. That's a pretty fair salary.

I asume that we'll get a better write-up sometime soon.

This doesn't surprise me. Ted Thompson #1 priority from the start has been Pickett. Plus he's obviously a RFA while Pickett is a UFA.

I hope Collins realizes he could burn through a lot of goodwill if he embarks on a protracted holdout with the team seemingly poised on the cusp of an extended run of success.

He's an RFA. The best business move right now is to wait. You can address Collins in the Summer.

I don't know why they're seemingly being so hesitant on resigning him.
Ted Thompson will lock him up sometime, it's just a matter of when. Collins is one of TT's guys and Ted Thompson won't let him walk.

Either way, whatever happens with Nick Collins--we'll get something good in return.

If the Packers want to re-sign him, leaving him an RFA and no discussion about contracts isn't the way I'd approach it. Of course we don't know what truly has happened, and could be a ploy to garner interest in the attempt to raise the value of Collins, but internally I would still discuss the intention to re-sign with him, if that is indeed the case.

I would think a Nick Collins holdout would be the norm rather than the exception this year. I haven't done the math, but his designation must put him in the category of "very small pay increase", which in his case is going to seem even worse of a financial "burden" than most of his 211 contemporaries.

From the "I wanna get paid" perspective, what gain is there in not holding out for a player? If the CBA talks continue, and if they DID reach the point that they were able to sign a new agreement, what would happen to the RFA's that signed their sheet with their team? Would they still be bound by it?

That uncertainty, coupled with the "leverage" aspect, might cause players to wait until the last possible moment to accept their fate, and in Collins' case, my personal speculation is that he will be amongst the most "disgruntled" of the crop.

Restricted Free Agents might not show up for preseason work

Posted by Mike Florio on February 22, 2010 11:25 AM ET
With more than 200 players who would have been unrestricted free agents in 11 days forced to accept the fact that they'll be slapped with much less valuable restricted free agent tenders in the uncapped year, Liz Mullen of SportsBusiness Journal reports on the existence of a "growing amount of chatter" regarding the possibility that the un-unrestricted free agents will stay away from minicamps and organized team activities.

"My guys are not going to show," one agent told Mullen.

Said another agent of the NFL, "If they want this fight, let's have it right now."

For many of the restricted free agents, however, the holdouts can't last beyond June 15. At that point, the RFA tender can be dropped to 110 percent of the player's salary from 2009.

For some, however, the difference will be negligible. As we pointed out last week, Texans tight end Owen Daniels would see his tender drop from $3.168 million to $3.0172 million. And Chargers running back Darren Sproles, if tendered at any level higher than the lowest-level right of first refusal, would already be at 110 percent of his 2009 salary.

Still, plenty of other players were earning in the six figures last year; after June 15, they'd see a steep drop in their seven-figure tender offers.

With most of the offseason work done by June 15, the deadline doesn't really mean all that much from the standpoint of minicamps and OTAs. And with a player's only true leverage being a withholding of services, the restricted free agents who would have, could have, and/or should have been unrestricted free agents have an easy way to make their displeasure with the situation known.

Of course, they also can make their displeasure known by pushing the union to get a deal done with the NFL on a new labor agreement before March 5.

For me personally, to sign Nick Collins this year actually looks less smart than I previously thought, when I consider the possibility of a lockout next year and the upfront cash a long term deal would require. Use the designation and hide behind it as "that was what was negotiated in the CBA". We fans are just going to have to suck it up. It is (again, imo) bad business to sign Collins to a long term deal in just about any scenario I can envision with a lockout looming. To think otherwise is just being sentimental to his "plight", again, imo. If there were some sort of "discount" to be had by signing him, I have NO evidence that Ted wouldn't take full advantage of that. I (we) don't know Nick's "number", but if I'm going to speculate, my (continued) bet is that he is looking for absolute "top dollar." If I am correct, there is NO advantage to paying him sooner, rather than later, other than some "goodwill" that I personally don't think exists relative to his desire to "get my money". I think any concept along the lines of Green Bay not wanting to sign him long term is inaccurate in the sense that I believe they would sign him if the number was reasonable.

That is my guess, and I'll also guess that due to some of the holdouts, the quality of play of the individuals involved and the teams they play for is likely to suffer.

If I were an agent with someone up for a new contract, I'd have been telling them for awhile now, "Expect to have to hold out. Owners might pick one or two players to sign early, but most they're going to wait on as long as possible. And unless you are a Peyton Manning type, don't expect to be one of those one or two players."

I'd be more surprised if Collins doesn't hold out than if he does.
