I like our guys. But the way the league is now, with TE's like our own Finley, no LBer in the game that I can think of can cover them. As they say, LBers are to slow, Safeties and CB to small.

So how do we address this. The trend isn't going to stop soon. We can't always put Woodson on them. He is a big CB weight wise. Are there any players that are built like Rouse? That can stay on the field as a LBer or S as needed. I wish rouse would have panned out better.

But this is a critical player type that is now needed. Fast enough to run and big enough to thump.

Be glad we are one of the few teams who has such a player....and the dude is so young with many years ahead.

You have to keep i tin perspective: maybe a handful of guys are in the elite class in terms of pass-catching TEs.

Gates is good, but is he as good as he was a couple of years ago? Tony G is getting old. The next generation so to speak is built with guys like Kellen Winslow, Witten, Dallas Clark, J-Mike... those are extremely talented players.

As we saw, Woodson can handle Witten. We have the player capable of matching up against the handful of TEs with superior talent. I don't think it's a huge worry going forward, barring we get our CB depth issues straightened out.

In terms of who could deal with Finley... my best guess is Ed Reed. Even then, you are talking about someone who is at a size disadvantage.

Maybe You try being physical with them and press them and not give them a free release.

I'd love to see a Revis - Finley match-up.

that is the thing. There are more and more every year. We need the defender to go against them. If we can get another CB so Woody can be freed then maybe we are OK.

But look around. There are more teams with a TE mismatch. Maybe not as fast as Finley, but just as big. Davis and Winslow come to mind besides guys like Gonzo, Gates, Miller, Celek and others.

I am going to watch for a 6-3 230 guy like Rouse was that could shift S/LB as needed and then be able to shift Woody between CB/S

Ah, I get what you are saying now PFWT - intriguing question.

I'd like to think someone like Collins might be another potential answer. Yes he gives up height, but he more than makes up with it in speed / hops / ball skills.

Problem with looking for a 230 lb 6-3 guy is that they have to have speed. Woodson was really rare in that he ran a 4.37 and had his physical attributes. You can look, but finding such a guy would require extreme patience. I'd make do with Collins and/or Woody.

Right now, you might be able to get away with playing a LB like Chillar on such a TE, and have Collins over top - Chillar stays underneath so any pass has to be really well thrown or it could result in a pick.

Perhaps to the scenario above, maybe have Collins come down and play as Nickel back and shift Woodson over top of the TE.

I'm not saying I want us to draft this guy, I'm just saying on paper he fits your description.

Taylor Mays, Safety, USC - He's also stunningly fast and athletic for his 6-foot-3, 235-pound size, running a 4.25 40-yard dash and possessing a 41-inch vertical leap.

If the guy can actually run 4.25 at 6'3" and 235lbs he will be playing on God's team because he sure ain't human. I would have to see that I mean really 4.25? I doubt anybody runs that at the combine let alone a dude that size.

I have seen Mays listed with a 40 of 4.42 which is still damn good. There are also others that are listed in the 200-220 range predicted round 2-4 now.

The CB and move Woodson to SS would work to. I think he could be more dangerous from the S position. Definately something to look at with how bad our middle field coverage has been.

It will be interesting to see how the super athletic TEs change the game.

The slightly obvious answer is to get freakishly big, strong, fast athletes like Finley and play them at S.

The TE killer.

Or you look at/for Chillar types - wasn't Urlacher a big safety in college, way back when?

I'm glad we've got the scariest example of this phenomenon (not that Olsen and Shiancoe are slouches, mind you) in the NFC North, tell you what.
