You know, there are only 53 spots on a roster. At the time, the GM makes the moves as he sees as the best AT THE TIME.
ANYONE can say later on "Why did he DO that?" As the old saying goes, hindsight is 20/20. If he KNEW who was gonna get hurt, or whatever, maybe he would have changed who he cut. But NO ONE knew at the time.

But what's interesting about these cuts is that all of them were widely criticized at the time. So it's not just 20-20 hindsight. Everyone could see that these guys had NFL talent.

But there are already some good explanations in this thread for why this happens. In the end, the W-L record is all that matters anyway.

I LOVE it!!!
Even when i'm not IN a thread, i get in it!LOLOL!!!

And i hated the Jon Ryan getting cut thing. Ted Thompson has something in common with Ron Wolf. Wolf said one of his biggest mistakes was letting Craig Heintrich go. I think alot of GM's don't appreciate how important a good punter, or kicker is.

Have to give Al Davis some respect on that one. Ray Guy, Janikowski, Lechler. He knows how important those positions are, even if he overpays for them or they don't turn out the way you want them to.

I mean, having a FG kicker who could consistently kick (nearly) 60 yarders is one hell of a weapon. That'll net you some points.

Anyway, as to this thread, I agree with most that has been said here.

Next to that, all these players had one good game. Rouse has never been an amazing safety and tackles don't tell everything. When your safety is a liability as soon as you have to go to cover 2 or 3, I'd rather not have him. Doesn't matter how good he is in the box. He's like a poor man's Atari Bigby.

And Sutton.... We're still hammering on that one. Sutton was one part of an amazing pre-season, who says he could've kept up and not falter, much like our O-line?. And he ran against 2nd-3rd stringers, mostly.

His stats right now are 9 carries for 53 yards. Yes, a whopping 9 carries. And he hasn't done a whole lot in the returning game. I think we're better off with Jordy back there than with Tyrell.

And again, he doesn't have enough speed to fit his play style. Maybe it'll be an overrated point down the stretch, but he's not a battering ram and he's no homerun hitter, either.

Obviously Ted Thompson just hates the Packers. The only reason he took the job in GB initially was to sabotage the rest of Brett's career here. Now that that part is over all that's left is to tank the team until he gets fired.

But I do think it's interesting sometimes to ponder what the thought process is in getting rid of players who end up doing better with other teams.

I've even stated that the majority of those mentioned who were cut, I'd have liked, but I also understand why they were let go AT THE TIME. Just because people griped about the cuts at the time, doesn't mean they understand WHY they were cut.

Again, this topic is good, but wrong time, in my opinion. We just came off of a good win and this is what we're going to discuss? Players who aren't even on the team? If you ask me, that sounds silly. Alas, no asked me though.

It's cool that Rouse had 12 tackles or whatever but don't forget that Romo threw for 392 and 3TDs. I'm not saying it's his fault but he certainly doesn't seem to be doing a whole lot to help the Giant's pass defense.

No one asked me either, but that not only does not stop me, it doesn't even friggin' slow me down :thumbleft: .

One aspect of ANY of these types of conversations that I find a little irritating is the preconceived notion that Ted Thompson is somehow acting autonomously. If I (or anyone else) were to try and bring up the concept that these decisions are arrived at via the filter of a collaborative analysis of the entire staff...

For planning purposes, I will expect and anticipate the, "Well, he is the GM, and he is ultimately responsible" speech.

But then you go back and read one of these threads, and there is no mention of a defensive backfield coach, or a special teams coach, or the scouts that are looking at other team's personnel, or .... any of it. You know...the, uh, STAFF.

It's all Ted.

It's mostly wrong... probably.

I'll wait until the off-season to fight that battle, too.

Who knows how these cuts are made, I was watching the Benglas Hard Knocks the other week and it seemed that the coaches were the guys with more say than the owner - although he probably makes the final decision.

As for the cuts mentioned:

Jon Ryan - they wanted more directional punting, getting punts downed inside the 10 etc rather than just thumping them through the endzone. Obviously looking at it now, bad call, the 2 replacements have been awful and mediocre.

Anthony Smith - A playmaker but he freelanced and didn't stick to his assignments. Capers system is all about the team Defense and relies on it working as a unit with players doing what they're told.
But after Rouse didn't work out Ted Thompson effectively admitted that the Smith cut was a mistake as we put in a waiver request for Smith when he was cut.

Tyrell Sutton - At the time B-Jax was injured and Wynn was the better back at picking up blitzers. So we went with the safer option of Wynn. Had we only gone with 2 FBs there would probably have been room for Sutton. As it turns out B-Jax got healthy, Wynn got injured, and we signed Green.

Aaron Rouse - More of a linebacker than a coverage guy, he would have been perfect in the Big Okie but we have Chillar so Rouse didn't have a spot. Clearly we've not found a suitable replacement, depth at S will be a need area this offseason.

No, the real problem is Ted Thompson has a huge ego and wants to get all the glory, so he makes all the decisions to ensure that the roster is made in his image.

Makes sense Zero. Maybe this belongs in the NFL section. I think the reason for discussing it now is that aarod looked at the production that the former Packers had this past week and went, "Huh. Whatcha think about that?" If they all were zero stats it wouldn't matter. Any one can lead their team in production on a given day. It will make mroe sense to say, "Yeah Rouse had 10 tackles in week 13 but only 30 for the year (or 180 for the year whatever the case may be)."

I like talking about the win too but in reality there is only so much that can be said and then it is just rehashing it over again. But then that is me. I am not saying I am right or you are right (which you are of course.) just that I don't mind looking at other issues as well. (To a point. I don't spend a lot of time in the NFC North section or NFL section as, for the most part I don't care what the Jets or Tampa or AZ does.)
