Favre sets NFL mark before leaving early

Posted: November 22nd, 2009 | NFL.com Staff

Leading the Seattle Seahawks 28-3 at Metrodome, the Minnesota Vikings arent taking any chances theyve pulled QB Brett Favre in favor of backup Tarvaris Jackson.

Favre isnt injured or at least we have no reason to believe hes injured so the move looks to be precautionary. Favre was excellent before leaving, completing 22-of-25 passes for 213 yards and four touchdowns. It was his second four-touchdown game in the last three weeks, and the 22nd of his career, good enough to pass Dan Marino for the most in NFL history.

Before leaving, Favre also managed to set the Vikings single-game record for completion percentage (88 percent), breaking the previous mark of 84 percent set by Randall Cunningham against the Bucs in 1998 (with a minimum of 20 attempts). The mark is also a career-best for Favre.

With the Vikings in control, Favres day looks to be over.

Of course, I imagine Marino accomplished that feat in fewer games.

Favre will not retire until he has every NFL record for a QB. I guarantee he will not stop until Peyton Manning retires because Manning poses a good threat at Favre's records.

I bet he'll be back next year with the Vikings. What QB wouldn't to have success like this?

Rapid - I think for his sake, he needs to keep playing until Manning drops dead. I guarantee that in the back of Favre's mind, he worries about Manning breaking his records, especially consecutive starts, wins, and TDs, of which Favre has all three but Manning is threatening the latter two.

I can only think of two football players ever who didn't care about records (that were any good), and that's Wallie Payton and Barry Sanders.

Don't have time to look it up but everyone thinks Brett's records are all cause of longevity but I believe he beat Marino's td record only needing 1 more game

The only record that Brett himself truly cares about is being the winningest QB to play the game. I believe at this time in his career, all he wants is to get to the superbowl and win it, not breaking records or playing for money. I also don't think he cares if Manning does end up breaking his records, Favre is all about winning and getting to the superbowl, not stats.

Brett said the record he most admires is the consecutive streaks record. That one, per his very own words, means the most to him.

OK, let me rephrase.

The only two players who I BELIEVE when they say don't care about records are Walter Payton and Barry Sanders. Sanders proved it when he up and quit right at his peak.

Based on? Not sitting with a painfull injury makes me thinkg differently.

I know, Mangini prefered him to start, but every sane QB would see that this wasn't working, even if his QB wanted him to play.

He went through a huge amount of pain, while playing horribly, for what? I'd guess his consecutive starts record. And maybe pad up the yardage a little.
