When we are in contention for the Superbowl, it is the Cowboys.

It's always the friggin' Cowboys.

It is a destiny thing.

Vince Lombardi, Tom Landry, Bart Starr, Roger Staubach.

Look at those 4 names.

Now look at the television ratings that are about to happen Sunday.

Thank those 4 names. More than just about any other football players and coaches, those 4 names made the NFL. Right place. Right time. Television.

The 90's. Pack back to contention. Who stood in their way? The Goddamned Cowboys.

America's team.

Except when the Pack got back in serious contention. Then who was voted America's Team?

The Pack

AMERICA LOVES IT when the Pack is back. It supersedes team loyalties. It hearkens back to a day when...

PRIDE STILL MATTERED. The associations that those two teams bring out of a national audience...It would amaze Wisconsinites on WHY people root for the Pack from other places, (same with the 'boys) and they draw STRONG opinions on it.

There has NEVER been a "Well, I'm a Packer fan, but if they don't do well, I'll root for the Cowboys...or vice-versa. Not amongst anyone reasonably (in?)sane on the whole damn thing.

EVERYBODY ELSE...from EVERY OTHER TEAM---will root for one of these teams STRONGLY when their own team is out of it, but these two are in.

This is part of the Vikings rivalry, too. They know of which I speak.

They feel like they got no respect.

In our division, it's now the Pack Vikes rivalry. They have earned the respect to be considered as such. They are relevant.

IF---- IF-----

The Pack pulls this division out of our ass and gets in contention for that Superbowl...

Watch and learn.

It will be the GOD DAMNED Cowboys in our friggin' way. Mark those words.

If this is confusing, dwell upon the friggin' trophy we are playing for...

And how that came to pass. If you don't get that, it is because you are young...I envy you for that, hopefully your dad is around--Give him a call...

I'm sure he can explain it to you.

Edit- Went off-topic...sorry, but in a good (educational) cause.

dfosterf, I was around for all those early games. That is when I became a Packer fan even though I lived in central IL. The Cow Belles CAN become a rival for GB IF everything comes together for both teams this is true.

However the Bears are THE rival even if neither team is doing well.
The Vikings are 1A as they have played better than the Bears over the past 25 years and for many people rivalry means right now/today instead of looking at 75 years of tradition.

That is the nice thing about the word "rivalry" everyone can define it any way they want. A couple of brother in laws who live in Michigan can say that GB-Det is the greatest one since they have to have Thanksgiving dinner at Mom's house. And for them it would be.

I factored all that in, Wayne.

Maybe in Wisconsin, maybe in Illinois...

That rivalry remains strong, perhaps strongest.

The rest of the country could care less.

Bears Pack--- NFC championship game, 2009.

ho-hum 3 buck night

Switch it

Cowboys Pack

Off the scale, interest-wise

Vikes Pack

ALMOST the same, but not quite, and contingent on one QB in purple

Cowboys Pack is THE rivalry, coast-to-coast You are right--many things have to come to pass for it to come to fruition, and that is a large part of what brings this rivalry back to the fore...

Look at the National hype ---game 3 last year (It was game 3, yes?)---everyone had an opinion--we all knew we were done, then, too.

"never won in Lambeau, deciding who will contend, yada yada yada"

Boys vs Eagles,Skins,Giants---Easterncentric

Saints vs pick any---all based on talent for the year

Not a rivalry

See and I don't care about the national picture as a rivalry isn't something that you jump in and out of.
And the ratings don't matter to me when I define rivalry. The people who jump in when it becomes "interesting" are not the real fans of either team. They are not on the boards posting about the game before, during or afterward. They are just looking to be entertained for the next 3 hours.

Bama-Auburn is 24/7/365. But not here in IL. I could care less. Cept my Sis-in-law lives in AL.

Yanks-Sox all day, all night, all the time. Good for them. They can stuff it as far as I am concerned. I couldn't change the channel to watch their game even a playoff. They have ruined the game by overpaying and stealing the elite talent.

That is my def of rivalry and why I say for THIS area it is GB-CHI. Up Nord, it is GB-Minny.

Minnesota is the biggest rival the Packers have going right now. Apples and oranges.

Never heard of the Bears? I would rather get swept 5 years in a row by the Vikes than lose to the Bears in Lambeau. Yuck. I hate them so much.

"porky88" wrote:

The Bears and Packers have not been a competitive rivalry for sometime now. During the Favre years, Minnesota was and is the biggest rival to the Packers. A core of fans from that generation despise Minnesota more than Chicago.

For the record, I'd root for the Vikings before the Bears too.

None the less you're missing the point. Reggie White to Carolina and Brett Favre to Minnesota is apples and oranges.
