At the very least I'm trying to point out that certain schemes put players in a position to succeed. Furthermore, I'm making a point to remember how bad our front seven was last year. We couldn't stop the run, we couldn't rush the passer, and we had a number of significant injuries. Hawk is the same player, I believe. The difference isn't as simple as his fire or aggressiveness (something that reflects my overall worldview -- that there's a lot more complexity to any singular issue than face value, which would in this case be Hawk simply trying harder or playing with more "fire"). I'm willing to bet that no amount of fire or aggressiveness or "chip on shoulder" type of play would have made much of a difference for Hawk on last year's defense.

I attribute his improvement in part to Hawk himself, but primarily to a confluence of factors (a healthy Cullen Jenkins, a defensive scheme that is much less predictable, and playing in a defense that features active LBs and many moving parts).

I am not trying to dismiss what you are saying.. I agree that the overall defensive performance and some individual play isn't impacted by the scheme or the players around him.

But last year, game in and game out you seen a Hawk that was tentative to attack the line of scrimmage, was swallowed up by lead blockers and overall was a player making reactionary plays a beat or two late.

Yes, we had some issues last year along the defensive line, but the linebacker play wasn't helping that either.. can't tell you how many times I was screaming at Hawk for sitting on his heels waiting for the contact to come.. surest way to get effectively blocked is to stand there and wait for the contact to get there..

IMO, we can make all the excuses in the world for a player getting put in less than favorable positions to win.. it is up to that player to win some of those battles.

I stand by what I seen last year.. and what I seen up til yesterday this year.. average to sub par line backing play...

I don't expect perfect reads, earth shattering hits every play, picks every game.. I expect guys stepping into holes, attacking blockers and making a couple of plays.

You say it isn't about fire or effort in attacking the LOS and making plays beyond it.. I disagree.. almost every snap you have to take on and beat a block.. that is all about reading the play quickly, attacking the play and hitting it all out.. effort and fire.

Seeing Hawk get through Joe Thomas yesterday was enough for me....

I went from 6 o'clock to 12 o'clock after that.

I think we figured out Hawks motivation. We haven't had many threads like this about him, and he hasn't had many stellar games. Coincidence? I think NOT!

BTW evad04... just to be clear.. intensity and fire isn't the only reason he excelled yesterday.. but IMO the most important.

Yeah, Hawk had it locked down yesterday, and damn did it feel good! Hell, Barnett too. Hell, all the linebackers. I'm starting to like our defense....when healthy of course.

Does anyone realize that our defense is currently ranked 3rd in the NFL behind the Giants and Broncos? I know we have played some cupcakes, but so have the overated Vikings.

You must read my mind. I almost started a thread on this but I will say it here. It's not like the Vikings have had this brutal schedule especially when you consider they had gotten all the decent teams they played at home until Sunday.

Their defense ranks seventeenth in both ppg. and ypg. We rank third in yards allowed and tied for fifth in points allowed.

So, hopefully we are a team with a rising defense and the Vikings are not this awesome defense that everyone thought they would be. The numbers show that. I mean they rank 20th against the pass and we all know from the past when your defensive numbers start looking like that PROBLEMS start happening. Like losing.

Five of the seven teams they have played have scored higher than their average for the year. It's not like garbage points either because all the teams they played before us were ahead at half time.

So while we may have our issues and things to clean up the Vikings defense better start putting up a whole lot better numbers because standing on the sidelines hoping somebody misses a chip shot or hoping for a last play miracle won't cut it all year long.

I think we will light them up Sunday through the air. They have played one good team on the road so far. Pittsburgh, and they lost. Other than that it was Detroit, Cleveland, and St. Louis and with that schedule there is no excuse to be ranke that bad defensively.....unless your really not that good.

LOL...

Your statement seems to say that you think it is unreasonable.. I think it is what we need in Green Bay.. lighting fires under peoples asses and having them play inspired ball.

Not only is it what we need, but it's what he's getting paid the 1st-round-#5-in-the-draft-bucks to do. He's getting paid like a #5 in the draft, and I don't think it's unreasonable to expect him to perform like one.

Which he did, this week.

edit--

Now he needs to do it week in and week out.

The ONLY stat that matters is points allowed per game, where we're tied for 5th with 16.0.

Still, 5th is pretty good out of 32 teams.

The other thing is we're on an upswing when it comes to momentum. I'm a big believer in momentum. We're finally starting to get the feel of a complete team.
