Can someone please explain to me when the 10 second run-off is applied as it was at the end of the Packers/Bengals game?

The idea is to prevent a team from taking an intentional penalty to stop the clock under a minute left.

So if a team commits a false start, with under a minute left, while the clock is moving, there is a 10 second run off to go along with the 5 yard penalty.

i was wondering this as well.

I think it was the bears game where they committed a false start with 34 seconds left and they didn't give the normal 10 second run off. Made me wonder about the rule.

10 second can also be nullified by a Time out.

Hasn't happened yet, but some team is going to use this rule to win a game. Imagine a team ahead with a small lead with say 2 plays to run after the 2 min warning. Trying to run as much of the clock out as possible. The other team does not have timeout. So run the ball, and let the clock tick, when the clock gets to 2 seconds, have the RT false start thus running an extra 10 seconds off the clock.

I keep thinking of Belema using the clock rule on kickoff in college a couple years ago.

I think if you have the lead, there's not run off. I think it only applies to the team down by points. I'm not sure.

Two-minute warning/10-second runoff:

The requirement that the offense has to be behind in the score or the score has to be tied for a 10-second clock runoff to be exercised against the offense for an excess timeout with two minutes to go in the first half or in the game has been eliminated.

Now a 10-second runoff will take place no matter what the game situation.

Any possible advantage for the offense (e.g., the old rule would not require a 10-second runoff if it were ahead) has been eliminated.

The defense has the option to decline a 10-second runoff (which will give it more time should it get the ball back).

We basically lost the game due to this rule, yet I watched the Bears false start with 34 seconds left and no run-off was applied.

Probably because the clock was already stopped.

It doesn't have anything to do with the score. But the ball has to be in play for the rule to be inforced. False start is a dead ball foul and thats why it doesn't apply. But you could use this penalty to exploit the game, I am surprised someone like Bill Parcells or Bilichick haven't figured out a way to do it. Or maybe they have and are waiting for the perfect time to try it.

beast (8-Aug) : But the Return from IR designations had to be applied by the 53 man cutdown.
beast (8-Aug) : It's a new rule, so it's not clear, but my understanding was that they could be IR'd at any time
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : *had to be IRed at 53
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (8-Aug) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.
Zero2Cool (8-Aug) : Packers star Howton, first NFLPA prez, dies at 95 😔
dfosterf (8-Aug) : Apparently it is too complicated for several to follow your simple instructions, but I digress
