Did you miss seeing those short/medium-range passes that seemed to be the staple of our Offense? The slants that allowed our WRs to get those YAC yards? Well, according to James Jones, you will see alot more of it starting this week against Detroit...

JS Online

So on Monday, position coach Jimmy Robinson implored his receivers to recommit to the YAC.

"Most of our plays have been taking shots," said Green Bay receiver Donald Driver. "I mean, all season long we've been trying to take shots. When you have so much success on the deep ball, you want to try everybody. And we've been killing people on the big plays.

"We just haven't been killing people on the quick plays, and I think that's where our game is at. Everybody knows that once the ball is in our hands, we're a dangerous team."

Headed into the game against Detroit on Sunday, Green Bay may change the strategy just a little.

"Obviously, we're still going to take chances down the field, but I think you'll see a lot more (short, quick passes)," said Packers receiver James Jones. "We start throwing our little stuff, our YAC should skyrocket. But we need to do it. Starting now."

I'm so glad to hear this, those slants and short/medium-range passes are what made our Offense so potent in 2007. The deep ball is great and Rodgers just may have the most accurate deep ball in the league but when you're having problems in pass protection, it's suidide to live and die on the deep ball, which is what we seemed to be doing. You use those intermediate passes effectively and that will open up the deep passing game as the Defense brings guys up to try and shut down the intermediate passing game. This is exactly what we need on Offense right now, get the ball into the hands of our playmakers let them go to to work.

Thanks for the post, and I completely agree. I think this will help our offense almost as much as if we had a run game. These short passes, if they are successful, will bring the DB's in and the end result is a better chance for a big play. I think it's all about moderation. Maybe we should try getting the passing game on track with(HOPEFULLY) an improved line now that Tauscher is back. The passing game setting up the run game? Not necessarily out of the question as of right now.

finally...i was thinking why we were always looking for big play...this makes more sense...we keep the ball...we let the D rest on the bench and most of all that opens the big play once in a while

Why did it take 2 losses and 20 sacks for this to be recognized?

This is a big sigh of relief. We have been taking too many chances. With the quick slants and screens, we should sustain more drives and convert more 3rd downs. I'm excited to see if we actually do run these plays more and if they can help Rodgers stay on his feet.

Nobel idea, lets make defenses earn it. The passing game has become predictable. They have basically been able to give up the LOS-10yards because we never throw there.

Another thing to remember...

When our intermediate game is clicking on all cylinders, as Defense's start to try n take that away, it makes the double move very effective and that should unleash the deep passing success we saw in the Preseason. I also hope Mccarthy, for the first time in his tenure, decides to STICK WITH THE RUN for more than 1 or 2 games. With Brandon Jackson coming back, we need to run the ball early and often, could you imagine how effective this pass Offense could be if teams start respecting the run a little bit more? I remember during the 2003 season when Ahman Green was nearly unstoppable, our PA was just as unstoppable. The Eagles respected the hell out of our running game in our playoff matchup and that's why Favre was able to hit those 2 deep TDs to Ferguson. So please Mike, stick with the run, even if it's not working at first!

I will believe these changes when I see it upon the field, if nothing less, we have learned that this coaching staff is stubborn as hell.. slow to react and change... I need to see it upon the field.

Here is to the changes spoken that make sense, let see it upon the field.

Wait, I thought that nothing could be taken from the preseason. ;)

Yes, yanking your chain.. if you can't take positive individual performance from the preseason.. then those exciting well executed plays shouldn't be used as well.. since you know it was the "preseason". 😉

Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Still HC positions available out there. I wonder if Hafley pops up for one
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Trent Baalke is out as the Jaguars GM.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Jeff Hafley would have been a better choice, fortunately they don't know that. Someone will figure that out next off season

Martha Careful (22-Jan) : you were blocked yesterday, due to a a recalcitrant demeanor yesterday in the penalty box for a recalcitrant demeanor
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Was that site shutdown on your end or mine? No big deal, just curious
beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.

Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Game not over yet
beast (21-Jan) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (21-Jan) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame vs the Luckeyes, bleh
