Ted Thompson has the deadest eyes and emptiest smiles I have ever seen in a man. He looks like an animated corpse.

Well what about Smith alot on here said he should be starting over Bigby or Rouse but he got cut to make room for a st player now tell me how that is fielding the best 53?

A ST player who just so happens to have a similar skill set to Smith - hitter, not the fastest in the world, not a lockdown defender.

People often get caught up in big plays - of which Smith had a couple. Nothing that Aaron Rouse didn't have in his first two seasons either.

Let's be honest - Smith made mistakes. This is the same man who, in the first and second game of the pre-season, got beat by second stringers and then had to commit penalties to make sure he didn't give up touchdowns.

Yes Smith stood out far more than Bigby and Rouse - but not always for the right reasons.

Let's be honest: do you think the Superbowl Champions would have given up on Smith if he offered them something? He was a third-round pick for goodness sakes. You want the Packers to compete for a Superbowl, but when they shed a player even the Superbowl Champions didn't think was good enough to make their 53-man roster, you complain.

I think people are looking for some vindictive reason that Anthony Smith was cut. It's pretty much down to versatility, if you're a backup you need to provide more, initially, than your set position. Thompson wanted a S/CB and he got one, that's it.

1) Better in a more versatile sense - yes. He offers more to this team than Smith - he can play a CB, play a S, and contribute well on special teams. If I understand correctly, Martin was never in direct competition with Frank Walker for his spot.

On a 53-man roster, you don't strictly keep specialists. As you get closer and closer to the 53 man limit, you look for guys that give you some options. From that end, Smith was strictly a #3 Safety and dime back. Martin, on the other hand can be the #3 Safety (he isn't now), can be a dime back, and is a solid special teams player. From that end, he is better than Smith in the options he provides you.

2) On top of that, have you seen Frank Walker play lately? The guy has been playing real well lately; go back and watch the Ravens / Cowboys from week 16 last season and you'll see Frank Walker routinely matched up on TO and doing a pretty darn good job containing him. Frank Walker is not playing like he did in Green Bay, he has taken his game up a couple of notches - as players sometimes do when they switch teams.

I am so surprised how everyone is ok with our GM not putting the best players on the field, but if they can play ST then they have the edge over a better player that only plays one position.

"dhazer" wrote:

As far as I can tell no starters were cut so it seems they are putting the best players on the field. Actually if they are back ups then they are going to play special teams primarily since Ted Thompson took the guys who are better on special teams you are pretty much admitting that he IS putting the best players on the field.

Nobody on here was in practice with the players every day. It was pretty clear from the get go that Bigby was going to be the starter. I have a hard time believing that the decision on who starts falls down to Ted Thompson and not the coaching staff. A back up player is going to see most of their time on the field on special teams. So if your back ups are the best special teams players then you are putting the best players on the field that you possibly can. That is how it is fielding the best 53.

You bitched when he signed Smith, you bitched when he cut smith, all you ever do is bitch. Even when you're not bitching, you find a way to take some subtle shot, it's so old.

How do you know if smith was a good team mate or not, how do you know that cutting him wasn't to keep the peace in the locker room? By watching him play in a couple of preseason games? You know absolutely nothing about smith, why do you care? You seem to think you know everything but in reality all you know is Ted Thompson moved on from your favorite player, and that was over a year ago. He will never live that down in your estimation so he is worthless in your eyes, must suck being a packer fan for you.

I think some forget that we have three factions to a team. Offense, Defense and Special Teams. You can't use a roster spot on offense for a backup that weakens your special teams unit. After all, a chain is only as strong as its weakest link.
