Texting should be banned - that's a no brainer. At some point, no matter how good you are at it, your eyes and complete attention will be off of the road.

On the other hand, I don't think that talking on the phone should be banned. I've got no problem with handsfree restrictions, but to ban it outright? What is the difference between talking on a handsfree cell phone and talking to a passenger in the car?

I think talking on the phone is far worse than texting. A text can be read/sent while at a red light or stop sign. When you're talking on the phone and driving it's a constant distraction.

I don't talk while driving unless necessary. Texting it depends on where I am. With all the idiots on the road, I tend to lean more to paying attention to the idiots on the road so I can avoid them rather than a convo that can be held at another time.

I know a lot of people that text while driving!! You can talk and look at the road. Both are dangerous but I have to say texting is worse. I believe talking on the phone while driving is illegal here in Massachusetts and I have seen cops do it. Doesn't seem like anyone follow the law...

Are they not banned in the States, that's amazing? Both texting and talking are banned in the UK, though you can talk with a handsfree device. Strangely enough though changing a CD/radio station is probably just as dangerous and that's still fine.

Changing a radio/CD takes a couple seconds, and you are done. Talking/texting never stops at just one. You don't change the radio/CD every 10 seconds, do you? You glance down (which yes, is still dangerous) to change the radio, then you are done. Talking and texting keeps your mind off the road. AND your eyes, if you are texting.
All it takes is a second for an accident to happen if you arn't paying full attention to the road.

In DC, both texting and talking on your phone is illegal. However, you can use a hands-free device. In MD, texting is illegal, but you can talk on the phone. Anyone under 18 is not allowed to use their phone in anyway while driving.

I personally think texting while driving is one of the dumbest things yoou can do while driving.

My fathers truck was totaled by a med student who was changing the radio station... swerved off the road right the truck was at ... POW, totaled, gone.
