I see no benefit for not going out and pushing to get the deal done ahead of camp and not wait for the market to be set.

How is there a market for Raji when he is in negotiations with only one team? Draftees are not free agents. The term "market value" does not apply to draftees.

There is market value set from the previous year..

A NEW draftee doesnt have a market value I will give you that

but the slot he was picked and the position he plays in has a marketvalue from the previous year

This is why rookie salaries are so ridiculous. And using what another team pays someone else as a guideline is a lazy way of determining value.

Except that it's fairly commonplace in all industries. "Competitive salary" is a euphemism for "exact market average." I agree that it's lazy, but it's hardly unusual.

But the difference is, draftees can only sign with team that drafted them. If they don't like the offer they get, tough shit. Owners/GMs are making this a lot harder on themselves than they need to.

Oh, I totally agree with you. NFL players used to play for far lower contracts (not only in absolute dollars, but also relative to the rest of the economy) than they do now, so I find it extremely hard to believe that many players faced with the prospect of millions would truly take the drastic step of sitting out an entire season, no matter how hardball GMs played. Even if they did, they'd not only lose out on the opportunity cost of a protracted holdout, they'd probably find themselves blackballed in the league and thereby lose out on real dollars if they were signed by another team the following year.

I think what NFL GMs are trying to forestall is a) the perception that they don't run player-friendly teams; b) creating disgruntled players who try to renegotiate their contracts at the first opportunity; and c) the public-relations backlash that ensues when such player difficulties arise. The problem is that situations b) and c) occur anyway, so what are they really afraid of? I think by throwing meat to the wolves, they're actually making them bolder.

The rookie slotting system, while needed, is realistically just a crutch for their lack of backbone.

I wonder if any player has ever tried the tactic of sitting out an entire season and then electing not to re-enter the draft, choosing instead to negotiate with teams as a free agent. In such a case, he would have a prior draft under his belt and thus wouldn't technically be an undrafted free agent, though I imagine teams would still do their best to treat him as one.
