Hmmm......interesting concept

The Vikings are a quarterback away from being a Super Bowl contender...

Yeah, like Vikings' fans couldn't figure that out for themselves.

In November of 1999, a high school quarterback, who threw 32 touchdowns and 2,506 yards that season, led his team to its first of back-to-back 5A championship football teams. The quarterback would eventually lead his team to the school's first state football championship.

His senior year was even more impressive. He threw for 3,022 yards and 41 touchdowns completing an insane 84 percent of his passes. Although he couldn't quite pull his team to its second state championship in a row, he was named the Gatorade National Player of the Year, USA Today's Player of the Year, and was an ESPN High School All-American.

The quarterback in question earned a full-ride scholarship to Florida State. It's every young high schooler's dream. How great would it be to play for one of the best football teams in America?

Instead, the player decided against college all together. After all, when you have the opportunity to be drafted number one overall in baseball for the team you grew up cheering for, how could you pass the opportunity up?

That's exactly what Joe Mauer did.

The Minnesota Twins' star catcher has lived up to and gone beyond all expectations in his baseball career thus far. He became the first catcher in the history of Major League Baseball to lead both league's in batting average in 2006 and the first to win two batting titles in 2008.

What would have happened had Mauer played for Florida State?

Well, he wouldn't have been on the Vikings' roster, that's for sure. He would still have been a quality quarterback I think.

If I'm in the Vikings' front office, I make the call and offer him triple what he's making right now (which is about $10.5 million). No way would the Twins be able to match it.

How exciting would that be? Minnesota's very own and most current celebrated celebrity playing for the team that we all love most. He's only 26, which is when most quarterback's are just hitting the prime's of their careers. PERFECT!

If I'm Brad Childress, I make the attempt (to no avail, of course) to bring Mauer to my beloved Vikings.

He has the ability to play the position, there's no question. But does he have what it takes in the NFL today? I want to know.

I've only seen Mauer actually pissed once in his baseball career. He was intentionally thrown at near the head on the first pitch. He didn't react to it, but he sure reacted to the second pitch that sailed behind his back. He gave the pitcher a stare down that I will never forget.

Mauer has a rocket arm and is one of the more accurate catchers in baseball. He's calm under pressure which is exactly what the Vikings need. He doesn't get rattled and pulls through when the game is on the line.

He could even where No. 7! We'll just trade Tarvaris for a seventh-round draft pick if we can get it.

Mauer to the Vikings! .................It has a good ring to it, doesn't it?

Poor fellas following the Vikings.

Like an entire state of Rodney Dangerfield's.

In Minnesota, they think that they are headed to a Super Bowl or something.

Squeak through to win the division once...and they think their team is all that, plus a bag of chips.

Problem is, no one else thinks so...

Tony Dungy; Why the Bears aquired Cutler

Tony Dungy questions Chicago Bears' acquisition of Jay Cutler
By Fred Mitchell | Tribune reporter
June 4, 2009
The giddy reaction in Chicago over the Bears' acquisition of Pro Bowl quarterback Jay Cutler is not shared by former Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy.

"[The Bears] took a risk [trading for Cutler]. I think they took that risk specifically with beating the Green Bay Packers in mind," Dungy said Wednesday. "I really think Chicago gave up a lot to get a quarterback who they believe is going to be the final piece of the puzzle. But I am not sure he has won enough to merit that yet."

Dungy and the newly retired New England Patriots safety Rodney Harrison were introduced Wednesday as the newest members of the NBC studio show "Football Night in America." Their first regular-season Sunday night game will be Sept. 13 when the Bears travel to Green Bay.

"I can remember when [coach Lovie Smith went to the Bears], saying: 'We have to beat the Green Bay Packers. That's what this job is all about in Chicago,' " Dungy said. "[They got] Cutler because of Green Bay's defense and all of the press and man coverage. [The Bears] have to have that threat."
Dungy questioned the leadership skills and maturity of the 26-year-old Cutler. Asked if Cutler is even the best quarterback in the NFC North, Dungy said:

"That remains to be seen. He is a very talented guy who can throw the ball very well. But quarterbacking is so much about leadership and so much about doing things under pressure. There is going to be a lot of pressure on him. ... We'll see about his maturity level. That's what I would question. And some of the things that happened leading to him leaving Denver ... that would concern me as a head coach. He can make all of the throws, but quarterbacking is much more than just making throws."

Well, to answer both of you, you would THINK he might say that Cutler was acquired to beat the current division champions...The Minnesota Vikings, not the 6-10 Packers, but he he didn't did he?

But then you would have had to:

A) Read the article, (and here's the tough part...)

B) THINK

Does that answer everyone's question?

Um dhazer why did he talk about the Packers if the article was about Cutler?

The Vikings are legitimate Superbowl contenders. Just like they were the past 2 or 3 years. So the media tells me. (I ignore results)

I don't understand why Dungy would think the Bears acquired Cutler with defeating the Packers in mind, I think they always think about that beacause it's the NFL's oldest rivalry . The Bears are currently 7-3 aginst the Packers under Lovie Smith and that is with either Rex Grossman, Kyle Orton or Brian Griese under center. Hey Tony, did it ever occur to you that the Bears made the deal for Cutler because they've had garbage at Qb for over 20 years and want to accomplish more than just defeating a sole division rival?. Just a thought.

No kidding MPF. What is all this Vikings/SB "Contenders" talk by the talking head? The only SB "contenders" in this division during that 3 year span that the media mentions were the 06 Bears (who actually made it) and the 07 packers( who were one descent pass away) The 10-6 Minnesota Vikings had to count on another division rival team(Bears) to lose in week 17 and for the Giants to rest their starters so they could manage a 1 point win against David Carr and Co. in order to obtain their only division title in the new millenium. Then came the Eagles and uh-oh these so-called SB "contenders" were crushed in their house. Now they're only a QB away? Really? I think the Vikings are a descent enough team to possibly make the playoffs again but I think labeling them SB "Contenders" is jumping the gun a bit.

Geez, trying to get cheeseheads to focus is definitely a script for "Mission Impossible"

First of all, nothing in this persons short article says anything about the current or recently past Vikings being Super Bowl contenders.
He suggests that that are a QB away from that.
However, I digress.

You all seem to miss this gist of the article...........

The focus (yes folks, focus) was on the outstanding athletic abilities of one Joe Mauer...catcher extraordinaire for the Minnesota Twins.
And how his past credentials in the football arena are as impressive as well.

"Mauer ultimately turned down a full ride football scholarship from Florida State University"

While the article has a certain sense of humor to it, the point that writer was attempting to convey is that the current QB situation for the Vikings is, well, suspect to say the least.

Focus people, focus.
