New linebacker Tinoisamoa excited to practice with Bears

By: Larry Mayer | Last Updated: 6/1/2009 5:30 PM

LAKE FOREST, Ill. Participating in his first OTA practice with the Bears Monday, Pisa Tinoisamoa appeared to be as excited as a kid modeling his little league uniform for the first time.

At one point the veteran linebacker removed his helmet, held it front of his face and smiled as he glanced at the C. It was as if he wanted to make sure that signing with the Bears on Friday wasnt a dream.

This is a great place to be, Tinoisamoa said following the workout. Its beautiful. The working environment here is conductive to my growth as a football player, and I really mean it. Coming here and experiencing this is great for me.

Pisa Tinoisamoa holds out his Bears helmet to get a glance of the "C" during Monday's OTA practice.
The scenario was much bleaker in St. Louis, where Tinoisamoa was part of Rams teams that stumbled to records of 3-13 in 2007 and 2-14 in 2008.

Theres just a certain cloud that hangs over you when youre there, Tinoisamoa said. All I did was go to work every day and work hard. Thats all I could do, and unfortunately that wasnt enough.

I grew up in San Diego and went to school in Hawaii, so I need some sun my life. Coming here, the feel is different. Not that I wasnt myself back there [in St. Louis], it just was hard to be free and loose. Everybody was tight. Nobody could say anything because we were losing.

Tinoisamoa spent his first six NFL seasons with the Rams after being selected by St. Louis in the second round of the 2003 draft, eight spots after the Bears chose cornerback Charles Tillman.

Playing for Lovie Smith and Bob Babich in St. Louis in 2003, Tinoisamoa became the first rookie to lead the Rams in tackles with 121. He also had four interceptions and four forced fumbles.

The 6-1, 240-pounder again topped the Rams with 135 tackles last season, but he was released presumably because he didnt fit into new St. Louis head coach Steve Spagnuolos defensive scheme.

Tinoisamoa visited the Bears May 20, speaking with coaches and watching the teams OTA practice. A bit apprehensive at first, he was relieved to be greeted warmly by fellow linebackers Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs.

I wasnt really sure how Id be embraced, but theyve been totally cool, Tinoisamoa said. Im familiar with Lancewe came out [of college] the same yearbut Brian, when I came to my visit he said [hello] to me and he knew my name, I was like, Wow, thats Brian Urlacher. He called me by my first name.

Joining a linebacking crew thats led by two Pro Bowlers will force Tinoisamoa to try to keep up.

That will raise the bar for me, he said. Now I know that my performance has to be on par with those guys. Thats what Ive got to shoot for. Before I was trying to raise the bar on a team that was mediocre. But now Ive got some mentors that I can look up to and know thats the level that weve got to play at.

The Bears have made no promises to Tinoisamoa; only that he will get a chance to battle for the strongside position.

Im here to compete, he said. Im here to give some production wherever they need itspecial teams, linebackerwherever they need it, theyve got me.

After excelling as a Rams rookie, Tinoisamoa is excited about the opportunity to play for Smith again.

Theres definitely some familiarity, he said. But I only got one year with Lovie and then he was [hired as Bears coach in 2004]. And then we tried to [continue to] run it, but he knew it like the back of his hand. So it was kind of hard for other people to run something they dont know as well.

Right now Im trying to get the principles down. But [coach Smith] said to run to the ball, and I can do that very well. So right now thats what Ill do and slowly pick up and get re-familiarized with the other stuff.

Never heard of him, but his stats don't lie..

I'm guessing the reason we've never heard of him was because his play on a totally irrevelent team.

Either way, the Bears just injected a little bit of youth at LB.. Which could be dangerous for the rest of the NFC North.

The guy has something like 10 sacks in six years and topped 100 tackles once?

Bench Urlacher and/or Briggs in favor of this guy. Then I'll make note of this pick up.

Yeah Ok, no big deal. The guy has tremendous stats. Trying to put the bar at 100 tackes before you take notice is good stuff.

Lets not forget he had 95 AND 94 tackles in a season as well.

The guy is a quality player and is on par, if not better than any OLB, we have on our roster.

The Bears signed him though, he must suck. Good pick-up number 3 for the Bears.

How you can not like the Bears off-season thus far is beyond me. They certainly IMO, are the team to beat.

I didn't miss them at all. The Packers have had players with over 100 tackles before and where did it get us?

OoooooOOOH he had 121 tackles as a rookie!! How many years ago? This past year he topped the 100 plus tackle mark again. Why is that? Couldn't be cuz their defense was on the field all the time?? Teams were way up on them in points and ran often?

I am NOT impressed. I'm only going off numbers and I am NOT impressed.

Actually, upon further review of NFL.com stats ...

			Games Tackles
2008	St. Louis Rams	16 16 104
2007 St. Louis Rams 9 9 40
2006 St. Louis Rams 11 11 36
2005 St. Louis Rams 16 16 94
2004 St. Louis Rams 16 16 95
2003 St. Louis Rams 16 15 76

Hawk has averaged over 100 tackles a season in his three years.

Just not impressed with this guy at all. If he doesn't fit the scheme, they would have traded him if he had value.

According to NFL.com he had 104 last year and 76 his rookie year.

Regardless, I've watched him play a few times and he's been one of the only competent players on the Rams over the last several years. I'd say he's a decent pickup by the Bears.

Edit: Z beat me too it... ESPN has the same stats as well so I'm guessing that the article was badly mistaken.

CNNSI, ESPN and NFL.com ... not one of them has him registering those totals, or even that close to it.

I am not impressed.
