This is Brett's thread, and heretofore I felt this needed to be posted here.

"Theres a line of thought that Favre risks his legacy every time he decides to stretch his career. The popular refrain goes that if he falls flat, hell be remembered as the quarterback who tried to put one over on Father Time instead of as the dynamic swashbuckler of his prime. Thats nonsense. Willie Mays pushed his career past the limit yet does anyone regard him as anything less than one of baseballs all-time greats? Muhammad Ali took a few too many punches during the twilight of his career and did that taint what he accomplished in the earlier years? "

The above is part of an Op Ed and needed to be posted in Brett's Thread (Full Op Ed Below.) Especially since it is not from a Green Bay scribe, a Vikings scribe, or even from any writer within in the NFC North.

No.... It is a view from outside the glass walls of the NFC North and comes to us from Buffalo, of all God Forbidden places?

Read away boys and girls... Enjoy!

I myself have never said if he wants to play he shouldn't. He has that right.
I DO think he's pushing it though.
The guy mentioned some all time greats from other sports that over stayed their greatness. Muhammed Ali is mentioned. I can't help but wonder if Ali over staying his "prime" might be why he's the shell of a man he once was. Did he take one too many shots to the head in his later years, that caused damage that we see today? If he would have quit when it was obvious that he was near the end of his storied career, maybe he would have his health today.
I don't want to see Favre like i saw Bart Starr back in the early 1970's. He lost "it", and looked awful and took alot of hits.
I'd like to see Favre quit with his health still decent. One bad hit, and he could end up regretting his attempt to keep his career alive.
In the end, only he makes the decision.
I hope that it turns out to be the right one for him in the end.

"Heres hoping he plays until hes 50."

Does this guy really want to see a fifty-year-old man playing football? There is something almost ghoulish about some of these Favre boosters.

"his passion is off the charts...his enthusiasm is unrivaled...."

It used to be. It's not anymore. He can no longer sustain it for long periods of time.

"It was during that time that Favre learned that openness and honesty can blow up in your face...."

Honesty and openness? All I can say is: Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.

"The popular refrain goes that if he falls flat, hell be remembered as the quarterback who tried to put one over on Father Time instead of as the dynamic swashbuckler of his prime. Thats nonsense."

He goes on to mention Mays and Ali. Usually you hear comparisons to Namath and Unitas, and it begins something like this: "When you think of Joe Namath, you don't remember the old quarterback who played too long." But in fact that IS what a lot of people remember. And that's why it gets mentioned over and over, even by people who claim not to remember it.

"There are reports that he wants nothing to do with organized team activities or minicamps and questions whether he needs a full training camp. And how does this make him different from Roger Clemens, who had a sweetheart deal late in his career?"

Now we are truly in La-La Land. Clemens was a pitcher. He played every five days or so, and there was no need for him to collaborate with his teammates. All he had to do was get up there and throw the ball. A QB needs to have a way more intricate relationship with his team than a pitcher does, and that takes time and commitment.

In addition, this guy never even mentions the fact that Favre specifically wants to play for the arch-rival of the team where he built his legacy. That's what has so many fans angry. I think most of us would be fine with him continuing to play just for the sake of playing. But it's about revenge against his former team. That's low-class behavior.

Cheesey-
It's pretty much a foregone conclusion that Ali's condition is based in the beating's he took in the later part of his career. If you can, watch "Thrilla in Manilla" a documentary on HBO, I think it's still playing.

Thanks Dingus.
Thats what i thought. Ali was "the greatest", but didn't know when it was time to quit. He's paying for it DEARLY now.
I do NOT want that to happen to Favre. If thats considered "selfish" by some, for me to think that way, so be it.

If he does play, and does get hurt, i'll say "i told you so" to those that blasted me, or labeled me a "Favre hater" for saying i want him to walk away while he can still walk.
He doesn't need to prove anything to anyone.....not even to himself. He IS one of the all time best. There is NO need to prove anything to anyone.
JMO of course, for what it's worth.

That's not up to you decide though, that's up to Brett. Brett may get banged up but he's not going to be like Ali.

It's a risk all players take. Football is a violent game. If you live in fear of injuries you might as well try golfing

Geez.......i have stated PLENTY of times that it's NOT MY DECISION TO MAKE.
How many times do i have to say it's MY OPINION?
You DO know that players have suffered life threatening or life altering injuries, right?
ALL i have said is i do NOT want that to happen to Favre.
Am i somehow WRONG to say that????
I think some who want him to keep playing are being more selfish then my wanting him to quit.
I hope i end up being wrong, and he doesn't get hurt. But he's getting OLD in football years, and it's more likely he could get hurt BADLY now.

If that ticks you off that i don't want him to get injured, so be it.

THATS THE POINT!
Most players in the NFL don't MAKE it to 40 and are still able to play.
Geez.......I thought you would figure that out by yourself.
If you ignore that as you get older, you are more likely to get injured, you arn't being honest.
Favre did NOT have the "escapeability" last year that he had in years past. That will NOT improve with age.
Plus the fact that he has dodged the bad injury for 17 years, to me at least, means the odds are getting to be more and more against him.

It's rare that a guy 40 can even PLAY in the NFL.
I HOPE nothing bad happens to him. But the odds are getting worse as he gets older.
Thats all i mean.
It's not my decision, and BF doesn't care what i think anyway, so why is it a big deal to you WHAT i think?

What does it mean to YOU when Brett said the Paackers were worried about his legacy?????

In other words what did the Packers think was going to happen for them to want to worry about his legacy?
