White, the sure-fire Hall of Fame defensive end who played six distinguished seasons for the Packers from 1993-98, has his jersey retired at halftime of nationally televised game with Tampa Bay. An emotional White tells the crowd, "I have been honored and privileged to have been a Packer, and I will always be a Packer" (Oct. 10).

I guess this silences those who bitched about how fast the Packers were moving to retire Brett's number. Brett retired in March and they were going to retire his number in September. White retired in Feb and had his number retired in Oct.

Unless Packers.com is wrong.

This is confusing. I guess it was retired twice?

1999:

White, whose Packers jersey was retired in 1999 was elected to the NFL 75th Anniversary All-Time team (1994) and inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) Reggie White's jersey will hang in honor at Lambeau Field, and the man who wore it for six memorable seasons is finally, completely retired.

White, the controversial but sublimely talented defensive end who retired last season, was honored Sunday night by the Green Bay Packers with a jersey retirement ceremony at halftime of the Packers' game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

White addressed his former teammates before the game and jokingly threatened to do what Packers fans have openly begged him to consider.

"I told them before the game that what I would do is have my jersey retired, then take it out of the picture frame and come out and play," White said.

2005:

On Sept. 18, 2005, the Green Bay Packers for only the fifth time in nearly nine decades formally removed a uniform number from circulation, retiring Reggie White's No. 92.

Reggie White's number was retired quickly because he died.

Favre's would have been retired quickly had he not pulled what he pulled.

Wikipedia states that it was retired in 2005 aswell.

In that case, what VegO says was one of the big reasons, I think.

Yup kind of shows that it does happen..

But I can hear the reasons why it was okay to retire Reggies coming

Was his number retired in 1999 and name added to the ring of honor in 2005?

I'm not quite sure about this all. I'm thinking I want to side with what Packers.com is saying though.

Coincidentally the day they retired White's number was on Brett's birthday. Oct 10th.

I remember that game. We lost against the Browns. We needed a stop and the fans were chanting "Reggie, Reggie"

Then we gave up like a 70 yard TD to a back-up TE. Just going on memory here

He is referring to when White's number was retired (again?) on Sept 18th 2005. (This still confuses me)

wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.
