it was. I'm sick of people comparing Thompson's free agency activity (lack thereof) and Wolf's. It was a completely different time. I'm not saying you shouldn't be disgusted, disappointed, or downright pissed off at Ted. But basing that pissed-offness on how Thompson stacks up to Wolf is misguided and lazy.

That being said, I'm not pissed off at Thompson. I'm glad he didn't do much in free agency. Now, if we lose Collins, Williams, Jennings, Kampman to FA, THEN I'll be pissed off.

Amen Brother. I'm right there with you. There are so many different things to consider here and I am sure I don't know on thenth of it all.

But I will stab at one example. We know we have guys that will have to have contracts redone and we are also in a unigue position with some like Kampman. The thought process there is to wait and see how he does in this new system before getting into a new contract.

What some here would like to see. A Big Time player named to play the other OLB spot. O.K., fine, then what happens if Kampman is an animal out there (which is what I hope happens) and plays as good or better than the big ticket guy we signed to play the other side? What is Kampman going to be looking for in that case? Do you think he will just be a nice guy and understand part of his meal ticket is sitting in this other guys back pocket?

Your asking Ted Thompson to spend when he really does not yet know what he has to spend. Jennings is still out there and Collins and Williams are chirping about their deals and carry all that over into what you will have next year as well because in every case you know it's going to be more than what we paid them last year leaving less for next.

Throw another big paycheck (FA) into the mix with all the guys that will have to be dealt with next year after upping the ante on several this year
and there's where you see guys hitting the road you don't want to see go.

I think there is one level of comparison between Ted and Wolf that can be made and should be examined.

Wolf wasn't afraid to add a guy long on experience but short on window of effective playing. IE the crafty older veteran that knows how to play the game and has seen it all before.

Ted's route is to pluck them before or entering their prime, which is sound but mixing in some veteran proven talent isn't taboo.

Think Keith Jackson, Eugene Robinson, Sean Jones, Jurko, the one year rental in Rison.. etc...

Completely agreed, but looking over his tenure, there are not many cases that he utilized this avenue..

I sure like it when I get to eat a tomato I grew myself. The grocery store ones are convenient, but they don't taste as good as the ones I grew, even when they do.

True, but when the frost stunts the crop, and you still have the hunger for that tomato, what choice does one have?

We have a offensive line of under performers and little grown depth along the defensive line, unless there is a bumper crop out of the draft or some hidden plants on the roster.

To the store one must go.

I am an advocate of letting the coaches evaluate what we have on defense at this point.. but I hope if they have some runts on the roster, they aren't afraid to hit the market.

I think Lombardi's post is spot on personally, He gives credit to Thompson where it is due I.E. The Draft. But, considering our switch to a 3-4, and to build a Super Bowl team, you have to add a couple of good players in Free Agency, its just common sense.
