NFL | Several special teams rules passed
Tue, 24 Mar 2009 11:26:15 -0700

Barry Wilner, of The Associated Press, reports the NFL owners have passed a rule stating blocking wedges on kickoffs will not be allowed to have more than two players forming the wedge. Also, a rule stating the kicking team is not allowed to have more than five players bunched together pursuing an onside kick was passed.

How can it be a wedge if there are only two players. These two special teams ones are the most ridiculous of the lot.

If you're not allowed to hit a QB at or below the knees while standing up, why shall a defender be allowed to lunge at or below his knees while on the ground? Sounds more like a loophole that was patched up than a further reduction in liberty. There is nothing preposterous about this new rule.

What does this mean though? More chop blocks and dangerous plays by offensive line on the defensive line, now that they know taking a player to the ground effectively rids them of making any play without drawing a penalty.

I see a slight difference between throwing yourself at the QBs knees and making a last hop when you're down on the ground. They both go towards the same region, but the second one didn't need to be banned for me.

I'd post more, but I have to get to my class. I'll come back on this later. 😛

I agree with the head shot rules. The wide receivers make this game exciting and we don't need shots like the hit on Boldin taking out our league's stars.

That Brady rule is absolutley stupid. My guess is Tarvaris Jackson doesn't get that rule made for him. I though the golden rule of football was not to quit until the whistle blows? I guess not. Makes no sense to me and I do see the O-line intentionally trying ways to knock the D-line to the ground. It will create more problems than it solves, but as long as precious Tom is protected.

Somehow in my mind, I will figure out a way to pin this crap on Bellicheat.. pile of dung in a cutoff sweatshirt.

Wonder how Palmer feels about this.. same injury in the playoffs but no urgent need to change the rules. Along comes the "golden" boy and Kraft and the rules get modified.. lol.

BTW.. Cassell proved that it is more about the system than it is about Brady in NE.. The Chiefs will not see the same results out of Cassell..

Of course.......we didn't have that problem last season, as our D-line was already playing by the "can't touch the QB" rule. So that should put us ahead of all the other teams.

I agree with all of that. I think the Chiefs should've sticked with a promising young guy named Thigpen, but whatever.

That is one of the big problems I have aswell. What if a big strong guy like Jared Allen will lunge into Tom Brady's stumach area and he will tear his spleen, will they address that aswell? I mean, they're doing everything to keep QBs healthy. This rule doesn't botter me that much, because, like the Engineer said, it was kind of in place already, but where will stuff like this leave us in 5 years?

Some clarification on the new low QB hit rule:

http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/03/25/pereira-discusses-quarterback-strike-zone/

So, moving forward, if a defensive player is on the ground and if he lunges or rolls at the quarterbacks legs in a manner that involves a forcible hit with the helmet or shoulder, a penatly will be called and a fine undoubtedly will be imposed.

That said, defensive players are still permitted to hit a quarterback low if the defender is coming off a block, just as Kimo von Oelhoffen did more than three years ago, when he blew up Carson Palmers plant knee early in a playoff game.

The defensive player also can use his arms or hands to grab a quarterbacks legs and attempt to pull him down, whether the player is on the ground or not.

But, as Pereira explained it, theres now a strike zone on quarterbacks that extends from below the neck to above the knee.

So lets get the actual rule straight.. if you are being blocked and on the way to the ground you can still hit the QB low, but if you hit the ground then you can lunges at him he gets a penalty.

A player on his way down will hit the QB with a hell of a lot more force than a player rolling to lunging into the QB.. they can defend this amendment all they want.. it is the "Tom Brady Rule".. period.

I can see it now this season.. the refs will have to determine if a player hit the ground first or the QB first.. another ambiguous call in the waiting..

Why not just put a flag on the freaking QB already and make it touch for the pansy asses.

This is a contact sport in which some hits have a degree of violent nature, as a player you know that going in and that is part of the compensation you receive for such a risk...

I am all for protecting the well being of the players, but sometimes it is over the line.. the totality of the rules surrounding the QB is over such a line before such a amendment, just keeps getting worse.

Some of this is more in terms of protecting revenue than the players.. they just don't have the guts to admit it.

The offensive points driven bias continues....
