Another "big" body in the interior for the Packers to choose from.. or maybe kicked outside for depth at Tackle..

Preston enters picture for Packers

March 23, 2009 12:23 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's Kevin Seifert

DANA POINT, Calif. -- This might not be the name that Green Bay fans have been asking about, but the Packers have expressed interest in free-agent guard/center Duke Preston and could know whether he will sign with them before the NFL owners' meeting ends this week.

Preston started 11 games at center last season for Buffalo and the Bills remain interested in re-signing him. The Packers would seem to be set at center with incumbent Scott Wells, but both guard positions are in flux.

Preston was scheduled to visit Lambeau Field last week. He was originally the Bills' fourth-round pick in 2005.

Thanks for the info PackOne.. 😉

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.

Referee Jeff Triplette was knocked face first into the turf and had his nose bloodied during Shaun Ellis' fumble return for a touchdown in the New York Jets' 31-27 win over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.

"I'm good, I'm good," Triplette told The Associated Press after the game, with both nostrils filled with gauze. "It's not a broken nose. It's just bloodied."

With 1:54 remaining, Abram Elam sacked J.P. Losman from behind and caused a fumble, and Ellis picked up the ball and rumbled into the end zone for the go-ahead score. During the hectic play, Bills center Duke Preston hit Triplette from behind and the official fell face first into the Meadowlands turf.

"There's nothing he could've done to prevent that," Triplette said. "It's a loose ball, it's a fumble and it's just football."

Triplette was checked by trainers briefly and then worked the rest of the game while wiping his face with a towel. He said Preston sought him after the game to check on him and apologize.

"He's a really classy young man because he came to the locker room afterward and wanted to know if I was OK," Triplette said. "Whoever No. 75 is, he's a really classy young man. He wanted to know if I was OK."

Triplette and the rest of his crew were laughing about the injury as they got ready to leave the stadium, with umpire Jim Quirk pointing to his bright red slacks.

"His nose matches my pants," Quirk said, causing Triplette and the crew to chuckle.

GB certainly needs a backup center, so this would be a good move from a depth standpoint.

I guess i feel pretty good about Spitz being a solid backup center, but that's a little different as he's become a pretty regular starter at guard.

Signed sealed and delivered...

http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/41948442.html

The Green Bay Packers have made a big addition to their offensive line, agreeing to terms on a free agent contract with 6-5, 326-pound guard / center Duke Preston, according to agent Craig Domann..

Terms of the deal were unknown.

An unrestricted free agent, Preston started 11 games with the Bills last year, all at center. He has also played some guard and right tackle for the Bills. The Packers consider him a prospect at any of the three interior line positions.

"he's got a nice frame," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said earlier this week. "He's more of an athlete. We see him as an athletic frame. Once again, hes young, too. He has a lot of football in front of him."

Though Preston adds a lot of size to the Packers offensive line, McCarthy denied that the Packers were changing their philosophy about what kind of players they want upfront. They drafted 320-pound Josh Sitton last year and were going to start him at guard until he got hurt.

McCarthy said Preston's size is impressive, but it's his athletic ability that stands out. He said that's what the Packers are looking for in their offensive linemen.

"If they are athletic they have the ability to gain more strength and size and be more physical," McCarthy said. "I think the athletic ability upfront gives us the ability to be more physical and be more multiple in our concepts we run."

When he signs his contract, Preston will become the first unrestricted free agent from another team the Packers have add this off-season.

Martha Careful (19h) : thank you Mucky for sticking up for me
Martha Careful (19h) : some of those people are smarter than you zero. However Pete Carroll is not
Mucky Tundra (23h) : Rude!
beast (24-Jan) : Martha? 😋
Zero2Cool (24-Jan) : Raiders hired someone from the elderly home.
dfosterf (24-Jan) : I'm going with a combination of the two.
beast (24-Jan) : Either the Cowboys have no idea what they're doing, or they're targeting their former OC, currently the Eagles OC
Zero2Cool (23-Jan) : Fake news. Cowboys say no
Zero2Cool (23-Jan) : Mystery candidate in the Cowboys head coaching search believed to be Packers ST Coordinator Rich Bisaccia.
beast (23-Jan) : Also why do both NYC teams have absolutely horrible OL for over a decade?
beast (23-Jan) : I wonder why the Jets always hire defensive coaches to be head coach
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Still HC positions available out there. I wonder if Hafley pops up for one
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Trent Baalke is out as the Jaguars GM.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Jeff Hafley would have been a better choice, fortunately they don't know that. Someone will figure that out next off season
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Aaron Glenn Planning To Take Jets HC Job
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Martha- C'est mon boulot! 😁
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Thank you
wpr (22-Jan) : Z, glad you are feeling better.
wpr (22-Jan) : My son and D-I-L work for UM. It's a way to pick on them.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Thank you. I rarely get sick, and even more rarely sick to the point I can't work.
wpr (22-Jan) : Beast- back to yesterday, I CAN say OSU your have been Michigan IF the odds of making the playoffs were more urgent.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Glad to hear you are feeling a bit better.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : I've been near death ill last several days, finally feel less dead and site issues.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : It is a big deal. This host is having issues. It's frustrating.
Martha Careful (22-Jan) : just kidding...it was down
Martha Careful (22-Jan) : you were blocked yesterday, due to a a recalcitrant demeanor yesterday in the penalty box for a recalcitrant demeanor
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Was that site shutdown on your end or mine? No big deal, just curious
beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : FG to make it academic
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : and there's the dagger
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooo 8 point game with 4 minutes to go!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooooooohhhhhh he missed!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Ooooo that completion makes things VERY interesting
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Game not over yet
beast (21-Jan) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (21-Jan) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame vs the Luckeyes, bleh
