The news story of a girl's basketball game between Dallas Academy and The Covenant School played on January 13th has grown into a monster. I was one of the two referees for this game and have watched with more than mild interest the reactions, comments and opinions of everyone from the parents of the participants to the hosts of the "Mike and Mike in the Morning" show in ESPN Radio. I believe that I have a unique prospective on this game.
First..."The Game"
While my recollections of times and events during the game are not exact, they generally in accord with Coach Grimes. The Covenant team controlled the opening tip and scored on a breakaway layup. They set up a full court press againt Dallas Academy until the score was around 20-0. The Covenant School then called off the press and dropped back into a zone defense for the remainder of the game.
Dallas Academy was unable to penetrate the ball through the zone defense resulting in many turnovers and subsequent Covenant fast break points.
In the second half scoring slowed as the Covenant team worked through their set of offense patterns. The also seemed to attempt more three point shots. On the surface this may appear to the fans that it is "running up the score" in fact, the percentage of three point shots approaches 30% in high school girls games. The missed attemps were easily rebounded by the much taller Covenant players
The 100-0 score was hit with about three minutes remaining in the game and Covenant no longer attempted to score.
